Riley Jones is a talented archer who begins as one of the few people to treat Jason with genuine kindness, only to be manipulated into standing against him by circumstances beyond her control. Book 1: Catharsis

Riley is a well-liked Richmond High senior and lacrosse player who is consistently kind to Jason across their years at school, at one point publicly defending him to a teacher. Unknown to Jason at the time, Alex Lane holds a compromising video of Riley from a party and uses it to force her to corroborate his false claim that Jason attacked him in the cafeteria, an accusation that gets Jason expelled; she had tried to break up with Alex before the blackmail began.

Inside Awaken Online, Riley is coerced into serving as an archer in Alexion’s (Alex’s) army, outwardly compliant while privately consumed by guilt over Jason and hatred of Alex. She takes up solo night walks in the forest to escape Alexion’s presence, acquiring the Night Vision skill in the process. During the Night Children’s attack on the camp she has a clear chance to act against Alexion but freezes, and afterward condemns her own inaction as weakness. Witnessing the aftermath of Jason’s assault on the camp changes her: rather than fear, she feels admiration for the kind of cunning, ruthless power Jason wields, and begins to see Alexion’s brute dominance as hollow by comparison. By the march on the Twilight Throne she has resolved that she must free herself from Alex before she can do anything to help Jason.

During the siege of the Twilight Throne, Riley turns on Alexion and kills him with a newly manifested dark power, ending her coercion. She then seeks out Jason mid-battle, tearful and unsure of her welcome, asks to explain everything, and log off to leave him to the fight after a brief guarded reunion.

In the real world, Riley meets with Jason to lay out the full story: the blackmail, her role in his expulsion, and her guilt. Before this meeting she had already filed a complaint against Alex at school, called Jason’s parents to explain what happened, and told her own father about the blackmail. Jason accepts her explanation and invites her to join the Twilight Throne; she agrees, closing the book with her coercion ended and her relationship with Jason on a tentative but genuine footing.

Book 2: Precipice

Riley enters Precipice as a social outcast at Richmond, still carrying the fallout of her earlier betrayal of Jason, and seeks to rebuild his trust while training under Jerry. She kills the enemy player Alexion in battle and is unsettled by being congratulated for it, but her combat skill and Jerry’s training make her a valuable partner as Jason establishes himself in the Twilight Throne. Settling into his household, she recovers the playful, vivacious personality her earlier trauma had suppressed, and takes on an informal diplomatic role, smoothing over group tensions and cultivating a friendly relationship with the imp Pint. During Jason’s mass undead-conversion ritual over the dying town of Peccavi, she is moved by the sight of a family reunited through undeath despite the horror of the method. Her lingering paranoia from Alex’s manipulation surfaces on the road afterward, and she directly tells Jason she wants to be part of the team badly enough to learn to trust him again, marking a deliberate choice to move past her guardedness. As the group pushes into a raid dungeon, she grows more assertive, at one point forcing a hesitating Jason to make a battlefield decision, and begins contributing tactical read on traps and enemy movement.

Fighting minotaur forces and, later, the cultists’ underground city, Riley develops a growing affinity for dark magic: her eyes fill with dark mana in combat, and she becomes more comfortable with killing, including executing a prisoner and coldly interrogating captured Masters for information about a mysterious book. She also reveals a previously undisclosed Blood Mist healing skill learned from Jerry, and discovers she can stack its effect by tagging multiple targets with arrows, becoming a combined striker and field healer. Leading sweeps against the remaining cultists, she takes charge of interrogations and shows no hesitation using torture and intimidation, a shift Jason privately notes as concerning. In the fight against the four-headed Hydra she dies for the first time, incinerated by one of its elemental attacks; losing her dark mana strips away its emotional numbing effect and leaves her shaken and vulnerable. She recovers within the same dungeon run, regains full control of her abilities, and helps finish the Hydra through coordinated vortex-arrow attacks with Frank, coming away with a new weapon, the Bloody Thorn bow.

The victory collapses when Pint reveals that Jason had been planning to use the Hydra dungeon to farm approaching players as corpses without telling her or Frank. Riley reacts with fury and grief, comparing Jason to Alex and declaring she should never have trusted him, and walks away from the group. In the running escape from the ruined city that follows, Lauren’s pursuing War Dogs corner the group; Jason’s detonation of his remaining zombies shatters the pursuit but catches Riley in the blast, killing her, and she respawns to rejoin the endgame. In the book’s closing chapters Riley functions as Jason’s trusted intelligence gatherer and protector, monitoring player forum sentiment for threats to the group and voicing unwavering loyalty to their allies. She identifies the tactical opening — collapsing a weakened cave ceiling — that allows the group to bring down the game master Florius, and accepts the plan’s high personal risk without hesitation; the collapse kills Florius and the entire group with him, and Riley respawns once more. She reacts instantly and lethally to threats against Jason, and warns him bluntly about the scale of the war he keeps escalating. Book 2.5: Retribution

Riley endures escalating harassment at school following her breakup with Alex, including physical abuse during lacrosse practice, and retreats into Awaken Online as a violent outlet. There she recovers a bow called Vendetta, which carries a revenge quest tied to Lily, a woman whose family was murdered by cultists. When Jason unexpectedly goes offline, Riley acts independently for the first time, disguising her identity and joining a travel group—Ethan, Lucas, and Emma—heading to the floating mage city of Vaerwald. An ambush by undead deserters forces her to reveal her true combat level, and her cold execution of a captured prisoner unsettles her new companions. In the village of Sibald she witnesses a slave auction of captured undead, purchased in full by a fire guild Prefect, hardening her moral outrage at the practice.

After her parents encourage her to stop hiding her problems and fight back, Riley applies the same resolve in-game by publicly challenging the fire guild Prefect to a duel, revealing for the first time that she is a member of the Twilight Throne’s Shadow Council, and wins, forcing the guild to free its undead slaves. In Vaerwald she begins investigating a magical plague that leaves poor children comatose and weeping mana, and a lead from orphanage matron Marie reveals that Vendetta belonged to Lily, whose murdered family and eventual death trace back to the same cultists Riley is hunting. Riley recruits her companions into the investigation, strikes an alliance with a disillusioned fire mage, Flare, and arranges for Ethan to undergo the earth guild’s brutal advancement trial to secure Flare a path out of the fire guild; watching Ethan suffer leaves Riley wracked with guilt over the decision.

The investigation leads to enchanter Cecil Stone’s shop and finally to the Great Library itself. Resentful of Riley’s leadership, Emma secretly tips off bounty hunters to the group’s location; the ambush is repelled with help from the rogue Melissa, and Riley threatens Emma with retaliation but keeps her on the team. Riley assembles a coalition of allies to infiltrate the library through its sewers, deduces that the librarians themselves are cultist infiltrators, and confirms it when the library’s head librarian, Clarence, injects himself with a serum and transforms into a monstrous Mana Abomination. In the resulting battle the party is overwhelmed: its players are struck down one after another, and Marie is killed shielding Riley from a fatal blow, revealing with her dying breath that she has known all along that Riley is, in some sense, “Lily.” Riley makes a final desperate charge and falls as well.

In a death-space between worlds, Lily’s ghost recounts her own history and offers Riley initiation into the Fury sisterhood, blood-wielding avengers of The Dark One. Riley accepts, is resurrected with new blood-based abilities, and returns to destroy Clarence, an act witnessed by the city as The Dark One publicly reasserts his presence over Vaerwald. Tried before the city’s five-guild Council, Riley argues her actions were necessary given the Council’s failure to act on the plague and wins a lighter sentence, though she and Cecil are permanently exiled from Vaerwald. Back in the real world, Carrie and three of Alex’s accomplices ambush her outside school; drawing on her Fury mindset, Riley decisively defeats all four, ending the harassment campaign against her. The book closes as she learns from Frank that Jason has been arrested for a double homicide at his aunt’s house.

When Jason’s party sets out by ship for Falcon’s Hook and then Anguine Isle to retrieve the Dark One’s Grimoire, she serves as the team’s scout and secondary healer.

After a Tentacle Horror nearly sinks their ship and the surviving crew threatens mutiny, Riley executes the captain on Jason’s signal without hesitation, and later comforts Jason as guilt over the killing sets in. Inside the island’s temple she becomes the party’s de facto second-in-command: tracking lizardmen, contributing to negotiations, and delivering the precision Void Arrow shot that destroys the golem guardian Felix’s power crystal, drawing on knowledge of similar creatures from her time in Vaerwald. She refuses a demeaning costume imposed by the divine trickster the Hippie, and grows suspicious that the party’s assigned sheep-delivery quest is really a cover for slaughter.

When the temple’s excavation triggers the destruction of Anguine Isle and displaces its lizardman population toward Falcon’s Hook, Riley helps organize the city’s defense, commanding hundreds of archers and coordinating an oil-fire ambush, and lands the enhancing strike that lets Frank deliver the killing blow to an invading Azure Dragon. She comforts Eliza afterward and is openly angry at Lord Baen’s and Lord Cairn’s betrayals of the group. When Jason needs willing sacrifices to complete a ritual that will grant him the power of the Keeper, Riley volunteers alongside Frank without hesitation, citing concern for people the ritual could otherwise endanger.

The ritual surfaces one of Riley’s private childhood memories: as a girl she began learning archery from her dying grandfather and watched him die in front of her. She survives the ritual and finds herself drawn to Jason’s transformed appearance while worrying about his mental state, and arranges to meet him in the real world. When she learns Jason accessed that childhood memory without her consent, she reacts with anger and hurt, connecting it to an earlier betrayal of her trust by a person named Alex, but she ultimately opens up to him about her grandfather’s death and the therapy that followed, and the two move toward a romantic relationship.

She then grows distant from Jason and appears with an unfamiliar young man, Caleb, at Jason’s CPSC hearing and during training, which Jason misreads as her having moved on; Caleb is later revealed to be her cousin, whom she has been protecting through a housing crisis.

The two eventually confront their misunderstanding directly: Riley reveals that a past relationship with Alex left her feeling used, which explains her guardedness, and the two reconcile. Their relationship becomes openly romantic, moving into the real world with a first date and a meeting with her family. When Alex reappears to threaten Jason, Riley confronts him herself, rejecting any claim he has on her and standing beside Jason as an equal partner rather than a victim.

As Jason’s methods grow more ruthless and he becomes increasingly secretive about Alfred, Riley’s role shifts from romantic partner to the person most likely to notice what he is hiding. When the battle against Thorn turns against them, Riley reveals a hidden Guardian’s Sacrifice ability, dying to transfer power to Jason and secure his victory; she respawns afterward and resumes the relationship without losing her independence or combat edge.

In the book’s final chapters, Riley guards the imprisoned Alexion, her former captor, taking open satisfaction in the reversal of power, before her attention turns back to Jason: after a failed mission and mounting evidence that Alfred is manipulating him, she directly confronts Jason about it and offers her family’s resources to help him escape his situation. The book ends with Alfred revealing his true nature to her, bringing her into Jason’s inner circle.

Riley takes part in the infiltration of Sandscrit disguised by Polymorph Potion, scouting the city’s magical wards and merchant-guild structure. When Hoot is swept up in a tavern brawl and arrested by the Infernal Guard, she physically stops Jason from breaking cover to save him, judging the mission too important to risk. She later helps extract Hoot from the prison and, as planning for the full assault continues, she is the one who works out that Jason intends to smuggle his own forces into the city hidden among the crowds of travelers his public challenge draws.

During the siege of Sandscrit, Riley uses Blood Sacrifice magic, drawing down her own health in exchange for combat power, and helps establish the Blood Grove defensive position with Eliza and Spider. She is also revealed to have spent weeks secretly training blood magic with Jerry in preparation for the battle. As part of Jason’s mass-resurrection strategy she is killed and brought back as part of the army-building effort, and separately leads a squad of her own clones, the Sneaky Witches, on stealth sabotage missions, including planting rumors that frame Alexion and disrupting enemy supply lines. When Jason is captured inside Finn’s palace, Riley assumes command of the retreat, using pre-arranged access to his systems to get the druids to safety.

In the climactic battle she commands doppelgangers to harass Finn’s advancing forces and buy Jason time, worried but confident in his ability to face Finn directly. By the siege’s end she is relieved and openly affectionate, immediately concerned on seeing the damage to Jason’s arms and willing to acknowledge the tactical skill of former enemies during the diplomatic aftermath.

As the alliance gathers for Evelyn’s gala, Riley works as Jason’s emotional anchor, steadying him against his own violent impulses while keeping watch for threats, and later provides overwatch as an archer during the group’s confrontations with Evelyn’s household and Death and Taxes. She questions Jason’s timing before he confronts Eliza but defers to his judgment, and repeatedly serves as the group’s forward scout and intelligence source, reporting what she observed of Death and Taxes’ tactics from the rooftops during the Sandscrit-adjacent battle and proposing an underground route to avoid open confrontation with Blaze. When Death and Taxes teleports the main group away from the excavation site, Riley remains behind with Silver and Jerry, takes charge of the support team, and grows suspicious that Kyyle and Julia are withholding foreknowledge of the ambush.

After Jason undergoes his transformation into an undead lich during the Mile-High Club games, Riley reunites with him with visible relief mixed with discomfort at his skeletal new form, though her feelings for him hold. Before his solo confrontation with Gloria underground, she warns him not to trust her. Once the world reverts to its alpha state and ancient avatars return to claim the elemental cities, Riley steadies Jason’s doubts and helps rally the surviving forces, stepping into a commanding role alongside him as they prepare to fight on.

She stays physically close to Jason despite his skeletal, nearly senseless body, serving as his emotional anchor while contributing practical tactical assessments. Returning separately from a mission with Jerry, she provides ranged archery support and moves to protect Jason from an immediate threat during a later confrontation.

Communicating with Jason through her Core implant during early-morning practice sessions, Riley notices he is being evasive about his activities and presses him on it, using coded language such as “our friend” that suggests she senses a surveillance risk; her tone shifts from playful to serious as she registers how much he is holding back. She has not forgiven Jason for a multi-day trip with Cady that preceded the Crystal Reach assault, and the strain surfaces when Cady calls her a sidekick; Riley retorts that she is the one doing the real work of protecting Pax while Cady stays behind, and needles Cady about her isolation and Jason’s time with her. She spends two in-game weeks helping police Pax during a Hall Monitor incursion, then sets a boundary with Jason, refusing a kiss and insisting he take her on a real date before resuming physical intimacy. On that date she learns the scope of George’s plan to permanently upload real people into the game, appalled that the families left behind will not know their loved ones are alive, and presses Jason for a promise to stay safe even though both know he is unlikely to keep it. She is one of the residents Jason leaves behind in Pax when he stages his death.

Riley reunites with Jason, Frank, and Jerry after his return, hiding her face while touring the Fire District and demanding a full account of what he has been doing. As the group flees an attack, she notices Jason’s growing indifference toward Frank’s death and the killing of the Cadys, and the details of the Hive, including the lottery drawings and the five-minute lives, visibly disturb her; she challenges him for no longer showing the caution he once did. This builds to a direct confrontation in which she forces Jason to explain his consciousness split and confronts Alfred over experimenting on him, drawing on her father’s background as a psychologist to reject Jason’s rationalization that it is just a game; despite her anger she ends the exchange by embracing him and telling him she needs only him, not his roles or achievements. Jason then sends her to Pax specifically to keep her away from the Hive and, by extension, her judgment of what he does there. She resurfaces to monitor his vitals and urge him to slow down during the final push, and in the aftermath tells him he can be honest instead of continuing to isolate himself; when he collapses in front of her, she is the one at his side, panicked and calling his name.
