Hoot
Hoot is the youngest member of Silver’s druid hunting pack, a talkative, curious Tamer whose bond with an owl companion makes him one of the group’s key sources of aerial reconnaissance. Eager, good-humored, and quick to smooth tension with jokes, he grows into a trusted scout for Jason’s coalition, surviving serious injury and profound personal loss along the way. His journey traces a path from an untested, easily overlooked youth into a resilient specialist who claims real pride and recognition for the role he carves out for himself.

Book 4.5: Unity
Hoot is a young member of Silver’s hunting pack, bonded to an owl companion, Archimedes, whose senses he shares for scouting. When the pack captures Frank he acts as a friendly, curious liaison, eager for stories of the outside world but wary of crossing Silver. During the Chasm trial he secretly leads Frank to a buried mastodon so Frank can get fur and meat to survive the cold, warning him to keep the help hidden from Silver, and continues quietly supporting him afterward, using humor to smooth Frank’s integration into the pack. When Silver moves to leave Frank stranded alone in the caverns, Hoot speaks up against her, arguing the trial was meant to be training, not abandonment. As the Knights of the New Republic camp at Haven’s entrance, Hoot’s link with Archie becomes the pack’s main source of intelligence; he relays aerial reconnaissance, mediates tension with jokes, asks for physical help crossing terrain he cannot navigate by shapeshifting, and steadies Frank when disorientation strikes during the council meeting.
During the Knights’ assault on Haven, Hoot uses his bond with Archie to track the attackers and reports that the enemy is flanking with yellow-robed mages moments before Archie is killed in the fighting; he experiences the death through the bond and breaks down mid-report, choking out “Fly, Archie!” before he can finish relaying the intelligence. The loss leaves him catatonic, unable to speak or care for himself, and he has to be guided and protected by Abigail and other pack members through the evacuation, described as a hollowed-out version of the man he had been. He begins to recover only once the counterattack on the Knights is being planned, channeling his grief into rallying Haven’s bird flock for reconnaissance support, addressing them as fellow mourners for their dead and coordinating their aid for Frank and Silver’s assault on the guild.
Status: friendly Tamer scout in Silver’s hunting pack, bonded to his owl companion Archimedes → recovering from the trauma of Archie’s death, channeling grief into leading the bird flock’s reconnaissance for the counterattack
Frank: moves from a cautious, secretly helpful captor-scout to a trusted friend and pack ally over the course of the book.
Archimedes: his bonded owl companion Archie is killed during the siege of Haven, ending the psychic link that defined his role as scout.
Silver: publicly challenges her decision to abandon Frank in the Chasm caverns, arguing it violated the point of the trial.
Key quote: “Fly, Archie!”
Book 5: Hellion
Hoot is the youngest member of Silver’s druid hunting pack, allied with Jason’s group after Haven’s abandonment. Talkative and endlessly curious, he has recently lost his previous animal companion and bonds with an owl named Eureka, using the connection for aerial reconnaissance. When the pack joins Jason’s underground expedition, Hoot pilots the Bone Borer and guides the group using Eureka’s waypoint markers, but the machine is destroyed by a sandworm swarm; Hoot is severely injured in the crash, suffering a punctured lung and a chest wound from a bone fragment. He survives and slowly recovers under the group’s care, incidentally gaining several levels from the fire-ant extermination that follows the crash.
Once healed, Hoot resumes scouting with Eureka, mapping the desert islands and helping locate Sandscrit, though he regrets missing the fight against the ant queen. His near-death experience accelerates his maturation: he tells Silver directly that the pack has earned its place beside Jason’s group and that Silver needs “more bodies to feed,” asserting his own right to accept risk despite the pack’s protectiveness. Wanting to see a real city before he might die, he pushes to join the Sandscrit infiltration mission; the pack instead assigns him to reconnaissance duty, and he reluctantly accepts.
Rather than stay behind, Hoot stows away on the mission in disguise and joins Frank’s infiltration team. In Sandscrit he struggles to contain his awe at the city and, having grown up under Haven’s alcohol prohibition, drinks for the first time; the night turns into a tavern brawl, and he is captured with a black eye by the Infernal Guard. Imprisoned, he makes friends among Karen’s fighters and treats the ordeal as an adventure rather than a setback. After his release, the information he picked up in prison about airship activity and prisoner conditions proves valuable to Jason’s group, easing his earlier embarrassment over the stowaway incident.
Back on reconnaissance duty, Hoot conducts an extended surveillance of Sandscrit through Eureka, pinpointing the gate piece atop the palace despite the disorientation of the prolonged bond. When the pack votes unanimously to join Jason’s siege of Sandscrit, Hoot arms himself with a blowgun and takes part in the assault, though his primary role remains scouting from inside the Carry-On Worm transport, marking enemy positions and spotting Finn near the Mage Guild. By the end of the campaign he has built a target-designation system for the team and adopts the callsign “Overwatch,” seeking recognition for a role he has come to take pride in.
Status: Alive — youngest member of Silver’s hunting pack → Alive — established reconnaissance specialist for Jason’s coalition, self-styled “Overwatch”
Silver: moves from a junior pack member deferring to Silver’s leadership to openly asserting his right to accept personal risk and acknowledging Silver’s need for more people to feed on.
Jason: grows from a wary, admiring newcomer into a grateful, trusted intelligence asset after Jason’s group saves his life during the underground crash.
Eureka: forms a deep psychic bond that becomes the backbone of his role in the group, though extended use leaves him disoriented.
Runner: receives comfort from Runner over the loss of his previous companion and is protected by him after the Bone Borer crash.
Key quote: “We’ve fought for them – with them. They saved my life. And you need more bodies to feed. Don’t think I haven’t heard your stomach growling.”
