Lucas is an air mage from a UK university group who joins Riley’s traveling party and becomes its diplomatic mediator. Less comfortable with violence than his companions, he works to keep the group cohesive, talking down conflicts and explaining unfamiliar guild customs to newcomers. He carries a guild-assigned coin meant to force spontaneous decisions, which becomes his personal method for resolving group disputes fairly. His romance with fellow member Emma is tested as the party’s journey grows more dangerous and its loyalties are strained.

Book 2.5: Retribution

Lucas is a newer air mage traveling with a university group when he joins Riley’s party, acting as its diplomatic counterweight and dating fellow member Emma. He is less comfortable with violence than the others and works to keep the group cohesive, mediating between Riley’s moral convictions and Emma’s discomfort with them. His air guild has assigned him a silver coin to force himself into spontaneous decision-making; he resents the exercise at first, secretly cheating a flip to get the outcome he wants, but over the book the coin becomes his standing method for resolving group deadlocks fairly.

In Vaerwald, Lucas repeatedly functions as the group’s explainer and brake. He walks Riley through the city’s toll-funded guild system and the fire guild’s culture of magic fed by conflict, and physically restrains Riley from killing a fire guild Prefect, warning her of the political fallout. He defends Riley’s choice to free slaves against Emma’s suspicion, and later shouts encouragement to Ethan as he undergoes the earth guild’s brutal advancement trial, supporting both Ethan and a shaken Emma through the ordeal.

When Emma betrays the group by tipping off bounty hunters to Riley’s location, Lucas is wounded by arrows in the fighting that follows. Despite his hurt, he insists on using the coin flip to decide Emma’s fate rather than letting his feelings for her dictate the outcome, telling her that his affection for her should have been enough to stop the betrayal but wasn’t. The relationship survives in a diminished, guarded form as the group regroups and turns to planning the library infiltration, with Lucas contributing analytical questions about its defenses.

During the infiltration and the climactic fight with the librarian Clarence’s true form, a Mana Abomination, Lucas coordinates lightning and Gust spells with Riley and the rest of the party, continuing to cast until the creature strikes him down along with the rest of the party. By the time the group’s fate is resolved and Riley faces the guild Council, Lucas is alive and being released as a freed prisoner; he plans to travel on to a new city with an air and light guild presence, still guided by his coin.

Emma: their romantic partnership survives her betrayal of the group only in a strained, guarded form after Lucas insists on judging her fate by coin flip rather than personal feeling.

Riley: shifts from cautious newcomer to someone who grows to respect her moral stance, physically restrains her from a politically dangerous killing, and later coordinates combat magic with her in the party’s final battles.
