Lord Cairn is a noble of Falcon’s Hook and rival trade-house lord known for shrewd, self-interested political maneuvering. He aligns with Jason against a competing noble when it suits his ambitions, presenting himself as a capable military co-commander during a citywide crisis while privately calculating his own advantage. As events unfold, Cairn is revealed to have engineered far more of the surrounding crisis than anyone realized, a scheme that ultimately catches up with him.

Book 3: Evolution

Lord Cairn is a rival noble of Lord Baen in Falcon’s Hook. When Jason proposes a plan, Cairn immediately recognizes the political opportunity it offers, eliminates Baen as a rival, and enters a strategic alliance with Jason, granting him temporary sovereignty over the city. As the lizardmen invasion approaches, Cairn commands his own soldiers and coordinates city defense alongside Jason, treating him as a military co-commander while remaining privately skeptical of the other players’ reliability. After the invasion is repelled and the Azure Dragon is defeated, Cairn reveals that he orchestrated the entire crisis from the start: he fed Lord Baen the original information about the magical orb’s whereabouts, engineering Baen’s downfall and the resulting chain of events, intending to eliminate his competition and collect a bounty on Original Sin. He explains this openly, confident in his own planning, but Jason has already arranged hidden reinforcements from the Twilight Throne led by Vera. Frank kills Cairn on the spot, ending his scheme and his political faction.

Jason: Forms a strategic alliance with Jason and shares command of the city’s defense, but the alliance is exposed as manipulation when Cairn reveals he engineered the crisis, and Jason has him killed.

Lord Baen: Secretly fed Baen false information about the orb’s location to engineer his downfall, then eliminated him as a rival once Jason moved against him.
