Grunt
Grunt is a towering, nearly silent enforcer whose loyalty begins with guarding Jerry and grows into steadfast service within Jason’s undead forces. Built for the front line and armed with a two-handed hammer, he communicates mostly through action, growls, and sheer physical presence rather than words. Fiercely protective of those he serves and willing to take on the largest threats in close combat, Grunt carries lingering grudges alongside his devotion, remaining a dependable, if gruff, pillar of muscle within Jason’s inner circle.
Book 1: Catharsis
Grunt is an enormous, sparsely-spoken bodyguard stationed at the Sow’s Snout Inn, where he serves Jerry’s criminal organization. Standing over seven feet tall and built of solid muscle, he carries a two-handed hammer and communicates mainly in single words or silence. His loyalty to Jerry is immediate and unfiltered: during a training session he nearly draws his sword when Jerry stages a false alarm, reacting to the perceived threat before recognizing the joke. Jerry notes that Grunt carries a large health pool, marking him as a front-line fighter in contrast to Jerry’s own evasion-focused build. By the time the Shadow Council convenes after the battle for the city walls, Grunt is present as a member of the group, now aligned with the Shadow Council and the Twilight Throne rather than Jerry’s criminal organization specifically; the chapters available do not show how or when this shift happened. He has by then fought alongside the others in defending the city and is described as a companion since the Twilight Throne arc began. At the council gathering he sits apart from the others with a keg, drinking directly from it, marking the only glimpse of him outside a guard role.

Book 4: Dominion
Grunt is introduced as Jerry’s silent, imposing bodyguard, watching Jerry fight without intervening because he trusts Jerry’s abilities. After Jerry is injured, Grunt’s role sharpens into overt protectiveness: he stands guard with glowing green eyes and crossed arms, tosses aside soldiers who get too close, and communicates mostly through growls, snorts, and physical positioning rather than words. He denies access to Jerry during his recovery, allowing only grudging exceptions such as Riley when she is helping. As the defense of the keep organizes, Grunt extends beyond guarding Jerry alone: he helps with defensive preparations, initiates rhythmic stomping and bellowing that rallies the troops, and shows a growing, if wordless, respect for Jason’s leadership. During the siege’s climax he faces off against the Abomination, a rival creature of comparable size and strength, in prolonged hand-to-hand combat that cracks the cobblestones beneath them; he takes heavy wounds but fights on, at one point tearing off and using one of the Abomination’s own severed limbs as a weapon, and the fight ends in a rough stalemate along the western barricade. In the siege’s aftermath he sets aside his usual bluntness to help Jason recover, offering physical support and quiet concern. He also shows he can hold a grudge: he remains gruffly disapproving of Morgan over the Abomination affair and hostile toward Alexion, even while remaining absolutely loyal to Jason and cooperative with Jerry and Frank.

Jerry: Grunt’s guarding of Jerry deepens from watchful bodyguard to near-parental protectiveness during Jerry’s recovery, only grudgingly allowing others like Riley near him.
Jason: Grunt shifts from a peripheral figure loyal only to Jerry into a recognized defender of Jason’s group, rallying troops during the siege and personally supporting Jason’s recovery afterward.
Morgan: Grunt’s grudging acceptance of Morgan curdles into open, if restrained, disapproval after the Abomination incident.
The Abomination: Grunt engages the Abomination as a rival in direct combat, fighting it to a bloody stalemate at the western barricade.
Book 8: Crucible
Grunt assists Jerry by carrying a chest of cosmetics and holding struggling crew members still, using his size and strength to intimidate obedience out of them.
