Gracien is the fire guild master of Vaerwald, a militant mage whose grievance against the city’s Council over its handling of the dark mana threat pushes him toward an escalating alliance with Alexion. Proud and eager for vindication, he lends his considerable firepower to the coalition’s campaign against Jason’s undead forces, taking open satisfaction in displays of destructive strength. As the alliance’s methods grow more extreme, Gracien grows conflicted, torn between his hunger for respect and a dawning horror at the violence he has helped unleash.

Book 3: Evolution

Gracien enters the book bitter that the Vaerwald Council overruled his recommendation to make an example of Riley and the dark mana threat she represents; guild members of his were injured by Riley, and he wants both vindication and revenge. Frustrated by the Council’s continued inaction and convinced Jason’s undead forces will only grow stronger, he commits to a partnership with Alexion, agreeing to supply confiscated explosives and undead slaves for a planned attack in exchange for enhanced political standing, while warning Alexion against betraying him. He goes on to help Alexion’s Confessor program directly, assisting with the ritual rune-carving that creates the Confessors, working through his impatience with the ceremony to complete the task competently.

Gracien’s class prejudice against Vaerwald’s “low-born” residents surfaces as he pushes for immediate military action against Jason and is willing to let lower-level citizens die to prove the necromancer’s threat is real. When the coalition destroys the town of Sibald, he contributes overwhelming firepower and takes open pleasure in the large-scale destruction. In the aftermath he is confident and aggressive, and when his competence is questioned by Caerus he responds with threats, framing his power as grounds for demanding respect from the noble-born.

As the coalition moves against Vaerwald itself, Gracien grows morally conflicted, objecting to the killing of two mages and to Tom’s callous disregard for mage lives, and he tries to hold to the original, less destructive plan. When the operation escalates into indiscriminate fires that risk destroying an entire level of the city, he protests that this was never part of the plan, but Alexion coerces his continued cooperation with the threat of execution. Gracien sabotages Vaerwald’s defenses as ordered, horrified at the scale of the violence and aware that he is now equally complicit in it, but unable to stop the escalation without sacrificing himself.

Alexion: Shifts from a prospective militant ally seeking Alexion’s validation into a terrorism partner supplying weapons and slaves, then into a morally conflicted subordinate who is ultimately coerced into compliance under threat of execution.

Caerus: Turns hostile after Caerus questions his competence following the Sibald attack, with Gracien escalating the exchange into a threat of physical violence.
