Westley Miller is a psychology consultant sent by Cerillion Entertainment and the CPSC to conduct a methodical, professional interview with the imprisoned Jason. Entering the game as a nervous outsider clinging to routine and detachment, he finds his firm convictions about morality and justice steadily challenged by Jason’s reasoning and by what he witnesses firsthand. His investigation gradually draws him out of the role of a distant evaluator and into direct involvement with Jason’s cause, reshaping his sense of who deserves his loyalty.

Book 5: Hellion
Westley Miller is a psychology consultant engaged by Cerillion Entertainment and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to conduct an in-game interview with Jason after Finn imprisons him. He holds a doctorate in psychology with a dual background in history, has previously audited unusual corporate assignments such as theme parks, vineyards, and prisons, and has investigated fraud and embezzlement cases involving desperate people who rationalized criminal behavior. Entering the virtual world in a pressed suit with a clipboard, he approaches the assignment as a methodical, routine-driven professional who is visibly uncomfortable with the fantastical setting, relying on note-taking and mental mantras to manage his nervousness.
Over repeated prison interviews, Jason’s arguments about torture, moral pragmatism, and survival ethics steadily erode Westley’s professional certainty. He starts from firm convictions that torture is simply wrong, but Jason’s reasoning, combined with Westley’s own admitted privileged upbringing and lack of desperate life experience, leaves him unable to hold his position. He grows to respect Jason’s self-control and reasoning about family, comes to suspect that his CPSC briefing from Gloria was incomplete, and is tasked with reporting any sign of corporate favoritism toward Jason to Gloria and the CPSC even as he privately begins hoping for Jason’s success. He also develops an academic fascination with Finn, having read Finn Harris’s AI research papers in graduate school, and pieces together, with growing horror, the scale of Jason’s killings and his eventual scheme to have willing travelers die repeatedly to build a mass undead army.
After Jason’s capture following the failed first siege of Sandscrit, Westley is pulled physically into the conflict: he witnesses the killing and reanimation of Frank and Riley, follows Jason through the escape tunnels, and is assigned by Finn as Jason’s “dungeon wellness coordinator,” a role that keeps him embedded with Jason’s group through the final siege. Robert equips him with an enhanced respawn ability and a reflective clipboard capable of deflecting spells. During the siege he is killed by Finn’s orbital strike and respawns repeatedly; the repeated deaths, layered on a lifetime of suppressed frustration at “useless bosses” and an “irritating family,” trigger a violent catharsis. He abandons his evaluator’s detachment, kills for the first time and finds it satisfying, fully commits to Jason’s side, and fights the rest of the battle as a combatant rather than an observer, growing resentful of Robert for the “gift” that made this possible.
Following the battle, Westley testifies before a congressional hearing on Awaken Online’s psychological effects. Rather than echo the CPSC’s concerns, he argues, drawing on his psychology and history training, that the game functions as a “looking glass” offering people a modern outlet for repressed emotion that ordinary life denies them, crediting his own violent in-game experience for the insight. He challenges Gloria’s credibility for never having played the game herself, and his testimony leads directly to the CPSC investigation being suspended.

Robert: accepts Robert’s gifted respawn ability and clipboard but grows antagonistic toward him, resenting the gift as cruel once he understands what it cost him.

Key quote: “Playing this ‘game’ often feels like you’re staring into a looking glass – one that tells us the unvarnished truth about ourselves.”
Book 6: Armageddon
Westley is interviewed on a broadcast about avatar personalities and the prospects for cooperation among the summit’s factions; he downplays his own reputation, voices concern over destructive player movements pushing for a server reset, and frames the moment as a turning point for what players want from the game.
Key quote: “We’re at a technological turning point. A paradigm shift of massive proportions. Perhaps the gaming community needs to ask itself what they’re truly looking for in a game. To flee from their life? Or to explore a new reality?”
Book 7: Timeless
As a forced evacuation unfolds, Clipboard Captain rallies players on the forums to get online and move through the newly opened escape routes, while also pushing back against skeptics questioning Jason’s motives.
