Alive — political ally within the Council, urging leniency toward Riley
Vivian is the Earth Guild Master in Vaerwald, responsible for maintaining the city’s gravitational infrastructure and administering her guild’s demanding advancement trial. Clinically detached and philosophically committed to the idea that clarity requires setting aside pain and emotion, she nonetheless recognizes genuine merit when she sees it, extending respect and small favors to those who impress her. Her authority later extends beyond guild matters into city politics, where she proves a pragmatic voice willing to push back against harsher factions.
Book 2.5: Retribution
Vivian is the Earth Guild Master, responsible for maintaining the city’s gravitational systems. When Riley’s group seeks a guild meeting on Flare’s behalf, Vivian requires one of them to complete the earth guild’s advancement trial first, and Ethan volunteers. She oversees the trial with clinical detachment, treating his suffering as a demonstration of the guild’s philosophy that true clarity requires removing pain and emotion as distractions. Ethan does not fully complete the trial, but his performance earns her respect: she tells him she would have offered him a place in the guild had he not already chosen a class, teaches him a Stone Skin spell, and honors the promised meeting with Flare before returning to her infrastructure duties. Later, when Riley stands trial before the five-guild Council, Vivian speaks up as a voice of political pragmatism, questioning whether the Council should make an enemy of Riley, effectively becoming an unexpected ally.
