Clarence is a polite, unassuming librarian at Vaerwald’s Great Library who offers quiet assistance to Riley’s investigation into a spreading magical plague. Beneath his professional courtesy hides a far darker secret: he is an infiltrator serving a hidden cult, having taken the real librarian’s place to operate undetected within the library’s walls. When his cover is exposed, the mask drops entirely, and he emerges as a monstrous, fanatically devoted threat that turns the investigation into a desperate, costly confrontation for Riley and her allies.

Book 2.5: Retribution

Clarence works as a polite, professionally detached library staffer at the Great Library, helping Riley’s party with an inquiry about runner records. When the party later returns and stages an emergency to force access to restricted areas, he invokes the library’s emergency protocols to guide them deeper inside, growing visibly frightened as the group fights through the building’s magical defenses. Guiding them to the laboratory level, he is unsettled to find a missing undead specimen and a torn-out page from the recent logs, unaware that these irregularities point back to his own cover.

Riley tests him with a magical affinity crystal and exposes him as a cultist who had killed and replaced the real librarian. He responds by injecting a transformation serum, declaring fanatical devotion to a dark master, and becoming a massive Mana Abomination with tentacles, crushing strength, and regeneration; in the ensuing fight he kills most of Riley’s team, including Lucas and Emma, and finally kills Riley herself. After Riley returns as a resurrected Fury, Clarence meets her with the same confidence that won him the first fight, mocking her as “another Fury,” but as she strips away his crystal-powered regeneration and other advantages, his taunting gives way to panic; Riley destroys him in the library courtyard.
