Runner
Runner is a shapeshifting druid hunter tied to Haven’s exiled pack, a gruff, capable fighter who moves fluidly between wolf, snow leopard, and other forms depending on the mission at hand. Initially wary and hostile toward outsiders, he gradually warms into a loyal tactical partner, valued for his scouting, blunt honesty, and battlefield instincts. Fiercely protective of his packmates, he balances a pessimistic, dark-humored read on the odds with unflagging commitment, fighting alongside Frank and the broader coalition through escalating sieges and campaigns while never losing his gruff exterior.

Book 4.5: Unity
Runner is a Haven hunting pack member who resembles Howl and is likely his brother. He is among the hunters who capture Frank and maintains silent, mocking hostility toward him during his early days at Haven. As Frank’s training continues, Runner takes on cooking and survival-instruction duties for the pack, warning Frank bluntly that “your troubles are just about to begin,” and later joins the other hunters in questioning Silver’s increasingly extreme testing methods, asking what Frank’s actual survival chances are. He can shift into both wolf and snow leopard forms and uses the leopard form for scouting.
After Frank and Silver kill the demon Palo, Runner is among the pack members who emerge from shelter and warns that Haven is now defenseless without its weather protections. When the Knights of the New Republic camp at the valley entrance, he sides with Howl’s aggressive stance and remains suspicious of Frank, but quickly grasps the tactical danger posed by the guild’s respawn mechanics and questions Frank about the enemy leader’s capabilities, showing growing professional respect. He takes part in the pack’s night infiltration back to Haven and backs Frank’s lie to the council that he alone killed the demon. During the Knights’ assault, Runner patrols the town with Howl, initially skeptical of the need, and discovers the enemy infiltration; in his snow leopard form he delivers an urgent report on enemy numbers and location before fighting until he is severely wounded and forced from combat. He survives, recovering while acknowledging the poor odds of Haven’s remaining defenders, and is relieved to learn other Haven residents survived. By the time the pack plans its counter-assault on the Knights, Runner has accepted a supporting tactical role, including corpse transportation, working alongside Howl and cooperating with Frank’s leadership.
Status: hostile hunting pack member, suspicious of Frank → wounded but recovering hunter, cooperating with Frank’s counter-assault plan
Frank: moves from silent hostility and suspicion to professional respect and tactical cooperation.
Howl: operates as Howl’s patrol and combat partner throughout the siege, sharing his aggressive stance toward outside threats.

Book 5: Hellion
Runner is one of Silver’s hunting pack, druids in exile from Haven who join forces with Jason’s group through Frank’s ties to Silver. He is initially hesitant about abandoning the pack’s established life to join the alliance with the Twilight Throne, but overcomes his reservations to support the group. Beneath a gruff exterior, he shows consistent protectiveness toward Hoot, comforting him, placing a supportive hand on his shoulder during the desert march, and standing guard over him when he is left vulnerable, at one point questioning Riley’s use of blood magic to treat him out of protective suspicion.
During the underground campaign against the fire ant colony, Runner complains about the desert heat and voices skepticism about Jason’s more unconventional plans, but cooperates regardless. He and Howl learn to shift into an ant form through Communion, gaining an enhanced size compared to ordinary fire ants, and the two coordinate together in the tunnel fighting. He also scouts the queen’s chamber to confirm she cannot move. The prolonged hardship leaves him openly questioning whether the risks of exploration are worth it, voicing a preference for the safety of home in Haven, and he and Howl press the group afterward over what the druid tribe actually gained from the mission, seeking fairer terms for the risks they take. He is shown to enjoy hard-won combat and takes some pleasure in prolonging a fight with prey that can still resist.
In the later stages of the campaign, Runner offers practical tactical input, questioning how Finn’s and Alexion’s forces could conceal such large troop numbers, and endures a bout of anxiety during transport through the giant worm’s tunnels, admitting his fear openly while continuing the mission alongside Howl. At the Battle of Sandscrit he fights in his ant form, using its fire-resistant chitinous shell to hold a defensive line in coordination with Howl and under Frank’s tactical direction. Afterward he keeps up his gruff, teasing rapport with Hoot, ribbing him over an enthusiastic outburst while remaining supportive. By the guild’s last stand, he is at Silver and Howl’s side assessing the defense against the approaching armies of Finn and Alexion, delivering a bluntly pessimistic, dark-humored appraisal of their odds.
Status: Alive — gruff, watchful pack member, hesitant about joining the Twilight Throne alliance → Alive — at Silver and Howl’s side assessing the guild’s near-hopeless defense against the approaching armies
Hoot: Runner’s gruff protectiveness toward Hoot deepens across the book, from comforting him and guarding him while he recovers to good-natured teasing once the immediate danger passes.
Howl: Runner and Howl become a consistent pair, sharing hardships (the ant-form transformation, the worm transport, fatigue with the mission) and jointly pressing the group over fair treatment of the druid tribe.
Frank: In the Sandscrit battle, Runner fights as part of the shifter defensive line under Frank’s tactical leadership.
Key quote: “Maybe this is why our ancestors chose to stay in Haven. If this is what ‘exploring the world and growing stronger’ looks like, then I may prefer my house and bed.”
