Protective friend who sacrificed himself for Jason’s plan and returns to support Jason through his depleted, post-transformation state
Frank is Jason’s oldest and most loyal friend, an awkward, bullied teenager in the real world who becomes a barbarian, berserker, and eventually a full lycanthropic Primal Shifter inside Awaken Online. Driven by insecurity about being merely average, he transforms through repeated trial and loss into one of Jason’s most capable fighters and trusted lieutenants, serving as both muscle and moral conscience for the group. His arc is one of hard-won self-acceptance, complicated by a deepening bond with the druid Silver and an enduring loyalty to Jason.

Book 1: Catharsis
Frank is Jason’s only real friend at Richmond High, an eighteen-year-old outcast targeted for his weight who bears the teasing with more equanimity than Jason manages his own abuse. On the day Awaken Online launches, he catches Jason after a run-in with Alex Lane, more excited about the game’s release than concerned with the school’s social hierarchy, and his warmth functions as a steady counterweight to Jason’s low-grade depression.
After Jason is expelled and withdraws, Frank sends repeated unanswered messages before finally reaching him through an in-game communication scroll. He is already playing at Level 33 out of Grey Keep, and he leads with gaming small talk before gently raising Jason’s home situation, offering to be there if Jason needs him and then dropping the subject rather than pressing when Jason deflects. He remains a consistent, low-drama presence in Jason’s life during this period, one of the only people who reliably checks in.
As Jason’s in-game actions escalate into open warfare and city conquest, Frank follows from the outside, largely through footage other players post online. He presses Jason to turn on his camera and explain what’s happening in Lux, more fascinated than alarmed, and jokes about having had something to do with the zombies, reminding the reader that Jason has a real-world identity beyond his in-game exploits. Later, he calls specifically because he noticed Jason had logged off, passes along intelligence he gathered from the Rogue-Net forums about Alexion’s approaching army, and negotiates battle footage in return. He notices unprompted that Jason sounds happier than expected, indicating he has been watching for signs of his friend’s emotional state since the expulsion.
Status: Alive — outcast student at Richmond High, Jason’s only real friend there → Alive — real-world friend maintaining regular contact with Jason via phone and in-game communication, tracking his adventures through posted footage and forum intelligence
Jason: Their in-person school friendship persists as a remote relationship after Jason’s expulsion, sustained through in-game messages and phone calls, with Frank consistently checking on Jason’s wellbeing and becoming a source of real-world grounding and forum-sourced intelligence.
Key quote: “I know your folks aren’t around much. If you need somebody, I can be there…”
Book 2: Precipice
Frank is Jason’s childhood friend from Richmond, where he is bullied over his weight; a passing mention of family money suggests he comes from a comfortable background. He calls Jason early in Precipice hoping to join him for dungeon crawling, then joins Jason and Riley’s party as a heavily armored tank, contributing extensive knowledge of dungeon mechanics to the expedition into Peccavi. Despite his enthusiasm, he has little real combat experience and hides his nerves before the party’s first minotaur fight. When the fight turns bad, his inexperience leaves the tank role unfilled, and Jason lets him die rather than risk the mission to save him. Frank spends 45 minutes in a death replay, works through his anger at the choice, and ultimately accepts it as the correct call.
The following fight against the Minotaur King becomes the turning point in his arc. Frank has spent his life defined by his weight, family abuse, and a sense that he is destined to be average, and when his fear threatens to overwhelm him again he gives in to rage instead; the resulting berserker fury lets him kill the Minotaur King largely unassisted, earning him the legendary Rage of the Taurus axes. He declares he will never be average again and reveals he has secretly been saving stat points toward this moment. From here he adopts the berserker identity in earnest, fighting through near-fatal wounds with Rage and Bull Rush, and privately admits he is starting to enjoy the violence in a way that unsettles him.
Frank continues to support Jason through the poisoning of the War Dogs and the incursion into the Masters’ underground city, though he grows uneasy with the group’s tactics, at one point asking whether their actions still count as just a game. After dying again in the fight against the Hydra, he receives a Thaumaturge skill book from the Masters and gains the ability to shapeshift, first testing it as a wolf-legged distraction that helps the party finish the Hydra off. When he learns that Jason ran a deceptive scheme without telling him, he confronts Jason for treating him and Riley as tools rather than friends and briefly cuts ties; the breach closes within days, and the two settle into a more equal partnership in which Frank is more willing to challenge Jason’s plans.
In the campaign against Lauren’s War Dogs guild, Frank plays a silent role in Jason’s interrogation deception and then leads the front-line berserker assault that helps break the guild’s army. As a founding member of the newly formed Original Sin guild, he accepts that the coming fight may kill him and tells Jason to make his death count, marking their bond as more than a game to either of them. He falls once more in the running escape that follows, cut down by the War Dogs’ leader in brutal close combat before Jason’s zombie detonation shatters the pursuit; he respawns, and by the book’s later chapters — now able to fight in a wolf-shifted, werewolf-like form — has become Jason’s most trusted lieutenant, offering himself and his fellow werewolves to buy Jason time against the game master Florius and standing guard afterward. When Jason is left shaken by a mystical experience near the book’s end, Frank is the one who calms him and looks after his safety.
Status: Comfortable but bullied Richmond teenager and Jason’s longtime gaming friend, joining his party as an untested, inexperienced tank. → Jason’s most trusted lieutenant and a founding member of the Original Sin guild — a battle-hardened berserker and Thaumaturge shapeshifter who fights in wolf form and serves as Jason’s protector and emotional anchor.
Jason: Their friendship survives Frank’s death in the minotaur dungeon and deepens through shared combat, but is tested when Frank discovers Jason has been manipulating him and Riley like tools; after a brief break, the two reconcile and end the book as battle-tested brothers, with Frank serving as Jason’s most trusted lieutenant and emotional anchor.
Riley: Stands with Riley in confronting Jason over his deception and continues as her steady combat partner through the book’s campaigns.
Key quote: “You said it yourself at the café. This isn’t a game for you anymore. It hasn’t felt like one for a while now for me either. Make my death count.”
Book 2.5: Retribution
Frank appears only through chat, as a teammate of Riley and Jason in the Original Sin guild based at the Twilight Throne. When Jason stops logging into the game, Frank’s concern escalates from curiosity to open worry, and he tells Riley he is thinking about visiting Jason’s aunt’s house that weekend to check on him. While staying in remote contact with Riley during her independent mission, he also continues handling Twilight Throne affairs, including arranging protection for the undead slaves Riley frees from the fire guild. He follows through on his plan, investigating Jason’s house in person and being detained by police in the process. By the book’s epilogue he has gathered news coverage of the incident and relays the outcome to Riley: Jason has been arrested for a double homicide at his aunt’s house.
Status: Alive — online, worried and in chat contact with Riley → Alive — has investigated in person and reports Jason’s arrest for double homicide
Jason: Frank’s remote concern turns into a real-world investigation, and he becomes the one who discovers and reports Jason’s arrest for double homicide.
Key quote: “Something terrible has happened.”
Book 3: Evolution
Frank is a barbarian in Original Sin, Jason’s core adventuring party alongside Riley and Eliza, and a member of the Shadow Council governing the Twilight Throne. While Jason recovers from a three-day absence, Frank trains and gains the ability to shapeshift into bear and wolf forms; he later consumes a Roc’s heart to gain wings, though flight control takes him weeks of failed, crash-landing attempts. He serves as the group’s primary melee tank and its running source of humor, joking to defuse the tension of increasingly dangerous missions while voicing blunt, practical objections to Jason’s riskier plans.
When the group sails for Anguine Isle to recover the Dark One’s Grimoire, Frank fights through seasickness to help fend off a Tentacle Horror attack that nearly sinks the ship. After repairing the damaged vessel, he vanishes from the beach along with the undead crew; Jason later finds him bound and gagged in a lizardmen camp, having surrendered once his captors’ numbers became overwhelming. Jason negotiates his release from the lizardmen priestess, but the price is an “Over Your Head” quest to kill a Tentacle Horror inside a temple beneath the island, reachable only by jumping into a sacrificial pit. Frank ferries the group in and around the temple using his wings, growing increasingly resentful of the trickster water god running the trials while still following through on every dangerous assignment, including repeated turns as a diversion to draw guardians away from the others.
Inside the temple he tanks the guardian Felix the Packrat, receives a Beastmaster’s Collar that lets him sprout wolf legs (an item he finds embarrassing), and adapts to a mercenary class with a two-handed sword after the Hippie’s trials strip the party of its usual abilities. He is present for the party’s total defeat by the corrupted Keeper and its undead guardian, and for Jason’s subsequent revival through the Old Man’s power. As Jason’s methods grow more ruthless, Frank increasingly copes through dark humor rather than objection, and by the war against the invading lizardmen he is openly enforcing Original Sin’s authority, warning hostile players, “This is what will happen to anyone that messes with Original Sin. We control this city now.”
During the siege of Falcon’s Hook, Frank leads the spear line and, after drinking a cocktail of enhancement potions that leaves him hallucinating the attacking Azure Dragon as a unicorn, delivers the killing blow that ends its rampage. He later joins Jason and Riley as a willing participant in the ritual needed to complete Jason’s transformation into a Keeper, agreeing despite not understanding its full consequences. During the ritual he experiences a vision of his own childhood: a quietly neglected younger brother in a family that consistently favors his more accomplished siblings, finding comfort mainly in his brother Chris and their dog Buddy. He respawns afterward and waits for Jason’s return with his usual humor intact, and by the book’s final chapter is perceptively watching the growing romantic tension between Jason and Riley.
Status: Alive — wounded and grimly resolved after the fight against Florius (prologue). → Alive — respawned after volunteering as a ritual sacrifice, now quietly observing Jason and Riley’s relationship.
Jason: Their friendship deepens from protective best-friend support during Jason’s recovery into a trusted enforcer and bodyguard role, and finally into standing beside him as a willing sacrifice in the ritual that completes his transformation.
Eliza: Frank grows from a wary new teammate into a protective, brotherly figure toward Eliza over the course of the expedition.
Riley: Their easy teammate dynamic holds steady through the book’s dangers, ending with Frank as an amused, protective observer of the romantic tension developing between Riley and Jason.
Key quote: “This is what will happen to anyone that messes with Original Sin. We control this city now. Remember that.”
Book 4: Dominion
When Jason is publicly humiliated by Gloria Bastion, Frank talks him through the crisis and pushes him to keep playing rather than give up. Soon after, Order agents attack the Twilight Throne; Frank fights alongside Jason but is outmatched and killed, telling Jason to go on without him. He respawns before Jason and is given command of a conquest expedition alongside Vera to convert nearby villages to Twilight Throne control, a mission he accepts out of loyalty despite discomfort with using force on unwilling populations. As the campaign proceeds he undergoes a ritual transformation that leaves him able to shift his legs and arms into a wolf/beast form and fight with dual axes and lightning, and he begins to see the native undead threat as more organized and possibly artificially enhanced than expected.
Leading the mission to the town of Fastu, Frank tries to resolve the situation without bloodshed but the town is destroyed regardless, an event that visibly weighs on him; he reports the destruction and the broader pattern of undead manipulation to Jason and begins relying on Vera to handle the emotional toll of dealing with survivors and the dead, since he cannot bring himself to do it directly. When Jason undergoes a dramatic dark transformation during a supernatural spire event, Frank witnesses it directly, feels the pull of the dark power being offered, and openly doubts whether the figure in front of him is still his friend.
As the village-conversion campaign continues, Frank is left to operate largely on his own, a responsibility that surfaces his lingering self-image as an inadequate, insecure kid despite his growth. After Fastu’s destruction, he tracks the attacker, Alexion, driven by anger at the massacre and at seeing enslaved civilians and children; he sets an ambush against Alexion’s forces, taking independent tactical command, but is defeated, badly injured, and forced to retreat. He continues chasing Alexion’s expedition to a gate-fragment site, where he loses his entire command in the ensuing fight but tries to seize the fragment so their deaths are not wasted; he fails to secure it and is mysteriously transported to Jason’s side afterward. There, Frank is treated for his injuries, gives Jason an account of Alexion’s forces and crimes, and settles into an uneasy alliance with Jason’s circle, providing intelligence and support while privately still working through the psychological toll of losses that felt real rather than like a game.
Status: Alive → Alive, recovering from the loss of his entire command, allied with and supporting Jason
Jason: Frank moves from Jason’s battlefield lieutenant and emotional anchor to an independent field commander operating largely on his own, and by book’s end openly questions whether Jason’s dark transformation has changed who he is underneath.
Vera: Frank develops a working military partnership with Vera, deferring to her tactical judgment and leaning on her to handle the emotional aftermath of village destruction that he cannot face directly.
Alexion: Frank becomes Alexion’s direct pursuer after Alexion’s forces destroy Fastu and enslave civilians, escalating from a distant threat to a personal enemy who ultimately defeats Frank’s command and kills his entire team.
Cisco: Frank forms a command relationship with Cisco as a trusted lieutenant among the Kin during the campaign against Alexion.
Key quote: “We’re going to track down these invaders and then we’re going to show them what happens when someone fucks with the Twilight Throne.”
Book 4.5: Unity
Frank opens the book measuring himself against Jason and Riley’s rapid progress and finding himself wanting; a public humiliation from his sister Rebecca and a conversation with Eliza at the Grove push him to leave the Twilight Throne and seek his own adventure. Alone in the northwestern wilderness he provokes and defeats a high-level dire bear, consuming its heart to advance his shapeshifting despite his revulsion at the ritual. Pursuing a mysterious white wolf, he is captured by unknown figures and put on trial before Haven’s council on suspicion of being a cultist; he talks his way into a probationary place in the reluctant Silver’s hunting pack, who Haven fears is corrupted. Assigned to a children’s shapeshifting class under Silver’s hostile supervision, Frank endures repeated humiliation before losing his temper and forcing a real confrontation with her, which leads to a punishing trek to the Chasm trial. Cold exposure strips him to a violent, near-feral state in which he kills and skins a creature without full awareness, an episode that unsettles him and pulls him closer to a wary, grateful Hoot. In the trial’s crafting phase he discovers an unexpected talent for tailoring under Spider’s teaching, and in the caves beneath the Chasm an empathic link exposes him to fragments of Silver’s traumatic memories, driving him toward a cruel, externally amplified anger that he uses to needle her about her past.
The pair are separated from the rest of the pack by a leech swarm and, later, by Palo Asher Lume, a demon posing as Haven’s protector who has secretly been trading Haven’s safety for sacrificed travelers, including Frank. Under torture, Frank builds mental defenses out of his own painful memories and a shadowy, rage-fueled mental projection to protect Jason and the Twilight Throne’s secrets, refusing to break even as the demon’s incursion nearly kills him. Silver turns against her original plan to hand him over and instead kills the demon to save him, an act that leaves Frank grateful, guilty over the intended betrayal, and increasingly aware of romantic feelings for her that he initially dismisses as inappropriate given her nature as an NPC. When Haven’s council learns the sacrifice removed the valley’s magical weather protections, Frank volunteers to infiltrate a nearby player camp, the Knights of the New Republic guild, enduring a real beating from Howl to sell his cover; he learns the guild intends to exploit Haven’s new status as a permanently respawning dungeon to wipe it out, and returns to become the pack’s trusted strategic advisor. During the guild’s assault he flies reconnaissance and physical combat missions for the pack while a shadowy, violence-hungry influence grows inside him, taking blame publicly for the demon’s death to shield Silver from the council’s suspicion.
When the Knights breach Haven and Silver is mortally wounded protecting the children, Frank loses control entirely, becoming savage in combat before collapsing. Confronting the Dragon of Life afterward, he initially rejects the dragon’s claim of manipulation and destiny, but eventually accepts a fractured dragon-soul fragment he has carried since the cultist encounter, reconciling his fearful, aspirational, and shadow selves into a single Primal Shifter identity and transforming into a nine-foot werewolf. He saves Silver’s life by feeding her the demon’s extracted heart, which transforms her as well, then leads the pack in hunting down and permanently deleting the remaining Knights through psychological warfare and overwhelming force. In the aftermath, Frank defends Silver before Haven’s council, delivers a passionate speech urging the community to embrace its predator nature rather than hide in fear, and catalyzes the valley’s decision to leave isolation behind and engage with the wider world. He commits to a relationship with Silver, now calling herself Ana, and returns to the real world with visible physical changes from his extended immersion, a new confidence in his own predatory reputation, and a more patient, empathetic relationship with his sister Rebecca.
Status: Level 163 Thaumaturge and left hand of the Twilight Throne, self-doubting and measuring himself against Jason and Riley → Level 187 Primal Shifter with full werewolf transformation, bearer of a Dragon of Life soul fragment, romantically committed to Ana (Silver) and a battle-tested leader among Haven’s survivors
Silver: Starts as a hostile captor who intends to sacrifice him to a demon and ends as his romantic partner, renamed Ana, bonded through mutual rescue and shared transformation.
Rebecca: Moves from feeling belittled by his sister’s harsh words to comforting her through her own crisis with newfound patience and empathy.
Hoot: Grows from a wary pack member into Frank’s first real friend within Haven, sticking by him through his feral episode.
Spider: Develops mutual respect through Spider’s tailoring instruction, which becomes a source of confidence for Frank.
Palo Asher Lume: Discovers Palo is a demon who has been trading Haven’s protection for sacrificed travelers, resists his mental torture, and later kills him.
Howl: Remains in open personal antagonism throughout, including a beating Howl delivers as part of Frank’s infiltration cover story.
Key quote: “Nothing. Nothing is wrong with just us.”
Book 5: Hellion
Frank returns to Jason’s group after weeks away on a mountain retreat, physically transformed and newly confident, initially concealing what happened to him. Guiding the group through mountain terrain, he secretly shapeshifts into a massive wolf-like form to eliminate a hostile player caravan, then admits to his companions that he has become a lycanthrope, a Primal Shifter capable of full-body werewolf transformation, gained after killing an ice demon and encountering a community of druids. Among them is Silver, an exiled druid with whom he begins a romantic relationship; he helps convince the druids to abandon their home, Haven, and join Jason’s group, while carrying guilt over having encouraged Silver toward the ritual that led to her injury and exile.
As Jason’s tactics grow more extreme, Frank becomes the group’s moral check: he threatens to kill Jason if Silver is harmed during a risky underground crossing, and he objects to Eliza’s experiments on captured travelers until he recognizes one test subject as a personal enemy, at which point his objection collapses. During the assault on a fire ant colony he leads the shifter front line and, by consuming ant hearts, gains a Were-Ant form, a heavily armored, scythe-armed shapeshift that becomes his main combat form for the rest of the book, used for tunneling, tanking damage, and manipulating terrain. He voices frequent practical skepticism about Jason’s plans but always follows through, growing into a trusted tactical advisor who helps coordinate sabotage and intelligence-gathering inside the city of Sandscrit.
During the siege of Sandscrit, Frank is killed and resurrected by Jason multiple times, briefly continuing on as an emotionless undead clone acting purely on Jason’s orders before his own identity resumes. He leads a strike team and solo-destroys an enemy laser tower; emerging from an ambush afterward, he declares himself done with his former, self-doubting self and fully embraces the predatory nature of his transformation. He also pursues a personal vendetta against Alexion, who has betrayed him repeatedly, and when Silver is nearly killed during the tower assault his drive shifts toward vengeance-fueled protectiveness.
In the climactic battle, Frank disengages from a fight with Julia, who injured Silver, choosing to return and defend Silver and the Mage Guild over continuing the confrontation, asserting control over the aggressive urges of the primal spirit bonded to him. By the book’s end he stands beside Silver during a tense standoff involving Julia, physically restraining her from attacking while deferring to Jason’s judgment, having settled into a life balancing loyalty to his old friends with his new role as Silver’s mate.
Status: Alive — outwardly transformed and newly confident, concealing the mountain experience that changed him → Alive — protective but restrained, standing beside Silver in an uneasy peace with former enemies
Silver: Begins a romantic relationship with the exiled druid Silver after his transformation, grows fiercely protective of her, and ultimately chooses her safety over personal vengeance.
Jason: Remains Jason’s closest friend but grows willing to confront and threaten him over the safety of others, while being repeatedly killed and resurrected as part of Jason’s undead army.
Alexion: Develops an open personal vendetta against Alexion after repeated betrayals, seeking a direct confrontation with him.
Key quote: “I hope we don’t live to regret this. Because if something happens to Silver, I’m going to kill you.”
Book 6: Armageddon
Frank spends the opening chapters mid-way through the Keeper trials, confident in combat but visibly unsettled by the question of defining his relationship with Silver; as a Shadow Council lieutenant he still contributes useful intelligence on the enemy SAFE guild, though his focus is split by the romance. At the avatar summit in Barrow, a disguised preacher publicly mocks his relationship with Silver as fake, and Frank’s composure collapses into open rage, at one point threatening to gut the man; the public exposure of the relationship triggers a deeper insecurity that the bond with Silver, an NPC/resident, isn’t fully real. That doubt festers through a private conversation with Riley, where Frank admits he feels increasingly shut out by Jason and questions whether he is deluding himself about Silver. It comes to a head at Evelyn’s gala: drunk and feeling sidelined after being passed over for trials, Frank grows possessive and confrontational, culminating in a full beast-form fight against Silver herself that wrecks the ballroom; he is ashamed once he sees the damage, and the two reconcile off-page, later describing it only as a settled ‘disagreement.’
Frank then confronts Jason directly, accusing him of hiding things and stalling Frank’s own trials, suspecting the distrust is tied to Silver; once Jason explains himself, Frank follows through and completes the trial. Shortly after, when Jason reveals a personal trauma, Frank drops his own grievances, apologizes for having been self-focused, and commits to supporting Jason and mending things with Silver going forward. That resolve is tested violently when Silver is critically wounded: Frank’s grief detonates into a bestial rage-howl, and at her bedside he offers his own blood to keep her alive and volunteers to sacrifice himself for her recovery without hesitation. Once she survives, his relief curdles into a promise of revenge against the guild responsible.
In the campaign that follows, Frank settles into a support and reconnaissance role: he offers blunt tactical assessments drawing on a military background, scouts using a still-developing partial Roc Form despite the physical strain of transformation, and coordinates with Riley when the group is separated from Jason. Later, during a lull, he goads Silver into a drinking contest in bear form, rationalizing it as tactical infiltration. He survives an underground blast at the excavation site in a chitinous defensive form and helps assess the wreckage afterward. By the book’s end, as the game world is upended by Armageddon’s aftermath, Frank stands steady at Silver’s side, their partnership settled and his focus on adapting to the new threats alongside Jason’s allies.
Status: Alive — mid-Keeper-trials, confident in combat but uncertain about defining his relationship with Silver → Alive — steady and adaptive, partnered with Silver amid the post-Armageddon world
Silver: their relationship moves from a source of public shame and jealous possessiveness, through a destructive beast-form fight at Evelyn’s gala, to Frank offering his own blood and life to save her after she is nearly killed, ending the book as a settled, steady partnership.
Jason: Frank’s resentment over being excluded from trials and suspicion that Jason distrusts him over Silver gives way, after Jason’s trauma is revealed, to an apology from Frank and a deepened, more supportive friendship.
Key quote: “I’m sorry. Sorry for what you’ve had to go through. I’ve been selfish. Focused on myself and my problems.”
Book 7: Timeless
During the forced-logout crisis in Gloria’s valley, Frank monitors multiple information screens for Jason’s group, tracking catastrophic news from the Twilight Throne while worried about Silver’s safety. When the group is surrounded by a traveler mob, Frank wants to join the fight but instead follows Jason’s orders to use his Were-Ant Form to dig an escape tunnel, prioritizing Silver’s protection over his own preference for combat. Later, in the real world, Frank reluctantly plays a public spokesperson role to support one of Jason’s schemes, voicing discomfort with the deception involved but going along with it out of loyalty to Jason.
Status: Intelligence gatherer for Jason’s group, monitoring the global crisis while worried about Silver → Reluctant real-world spokesperson, having helped Jason’s plan despite discomfort with the deception it required
Key quote: “A cringey script. I’m going to need a shower to get all this eyeliner off…”
Book 8: Crucible
Frank spends the early part of the book as the group’s tension-diffuser, cracking jokes to ease friction between Cady and Riley and teasing Eliza and Alex while the avatars work through the fallout of the Relic of the Dark and the Hall Monitor crisis. As a Fire Avatar he can transform into a draconic form, and he spends two in-game weeks helping police Pax during its population crisis. When Jason calls a private meeting with Riley and Alfred to lay out George’s plans for digital consciousness control, Frank listens along with the others; the danger of what he learns leaves him half-joking that Jason should go back to handling things alone and keeping them in the dark, since knowing more just makes them targets. He stays anyway. He is one of the residents Jason leaves safely behind in Pax during a staged death.
After a long stretch apart from Jason, Frank reunites with him at Jerry’s showroom and reacts with a mix of skepticism and concern as Jason’s account of his recent adventures escalates, growing exasperated when Jason reveals he has become a dungeon boss. During the infiltration operation that follows, Frank is torn apart by a horde of travelers, sacrificing himself to buy time and bodies for Jason’s decoy strategy; his death is a day-long setback that visibly upsets Riley and Jerry. He returns for the book’s final stretch, physically supporting a depleted, procrastinating Jason before and after his public pitch, coordinating with Riley to keep him steady and giving him space for a private conversation while staying close by.
Status: Fire Avatar in Jason’s inner circle, easing tension with humor while helping police Pax → Protective friend who sacrificed himself for Jason’s plan and returns to support Jason through his depleted, post-transformation state
Jason: moves from comic-relief bystander to a friend briefed on George’s plans who fears the danger of knowing too much, then sacrifices himself for Jason’s decoy strategy and stays on as his protective support afterward.
Riley: their working partnership deepens from shared reactions and show-prep teamwork into jointly watching over and coordinating care for a struggling Jason.
Key quote: “I kind of wish you’d go back to handling stuff solo and keeping secrets. It might be safer for us.”
