Deceased — killed shielding Riley from Clarence’s attack; reappears posthumously as a spirit of the Fury sisterhood
Marie is the aging matron of a low-streets orphanage in Vaerwald and a former dark magic practitioner who has retired from a violent past to atone for old mistakes. Still mourning a young woman she once raised, she quietly shelters the vulnerable while keeping a network of underground connections. When a conspiracy threatens the city’s children, she is drawn back into the fight, lending her stealth, blade work, and hard-won experience to a dangerous coalition, ultimately proving willing to sacrifice everything for those she has come to protect.
Book 2.5: Retribution
Marie is introduced as an older orphanage matron in Vaerwald’s low streets who initially treats Riley with suspicion before coming to trust her, drawing on stealth, knife combat, and a lifetime of underground connections in the district. She is still grieving Lily, a young woman she raised who was killed pursuing the same cultists now behind a plague afflicting the city’s children, and she has been secretly sheltering plague victims.
When the investigation turns toward infiltrating the Great Library, Marie formally comes out of retirement to join the mission, taking a leading role in planning alongside Cecil and Melissa. She reveals herself as a former dark magic practitioner seeking redemption for past mistakes that hurt people close to her, treating the orphanage as a form of penance, and she has a long-standing partnership with Melissa. During the infiltration she acts as tactical advisor and combat support, warning against unnecessary killing and pressing the team to avoid harming library staff, while offering practical suggestions such as burning the library’s paper defenses during the retreat and asking after specimen logs during the laboratory investigation.
When the librarian Clarence reveals himself as a cultist and transforms into an overwhelming Mana Abomination, Marie throws herself in front of Riley to block a fatal strike, dying in her place. With her last words she addresses Riley as “Lily,” revealing she knew Riley’s true identity and had kept it secret. After death she appears as a spectral member of the Fury sisterhood alongside Lily, blessing Riley’s transformation into a Fury and giving her a second chance against Clarence; her sacrifice becomes the emotional catalyst for Riley’s subsequent victory.
