Melissa is a red-haired rogue leader who commands her own network of cloaked operatives, rebuilt after a personal betrayal she still intends to settle. Sharp, capable, and treating danger as something close to sport, she evaluates newcomers on their merits before committing her skills to their cause. Allied through a fellow operative to a growing coalition, she brings exceptional stealth and combat ability to their most perilous ventures, forming a close working partnership with another seasoned ally and growing steadily more respectful of the group’s leadership along the way.

Book 2.5: Retribution

Melissa first appears leading a team of cloaked rogues in an ambush against bounty hunters, evaluating Riley’s potential after hearing she has taken up Lily’s quest; she has a working relationship with Cecil and, through him, becomes an ally to Riley’s group. She reveals a personal history with Jerry, a former leader whose sudden, unexplained departure caused her rogue company to collapse; she has since rebuilt the organization and intends to settle scores with him if the opportunity arises. She commits her team to the planning for an infiltration of the Great Library, taking on a tactical role alongside Cecil and treating the dangerous mission as entertainment.

During the infiltration, Melissa works closely with Marie, showing exceptional stealth and combat skill, and grows in respect for Riley’s leadership over the course of the mission. She scouts ahead of the group, clears obstacles, and improvises when the team needs a pretext to bypass library restrictions, detonating explosive crystals to create an emergency that forces the librarian Clarence to open restricted areas. When the group’s presence draws the library’s magical defenses, she fights through paper golems and other constructs alongside the team. When the librarian Clarence is exposed as a cultist and transforms into a Mana Abomination, Melissa fights to the end in the resulting battle and is killed along with most of the rest of the team.

Melissa reappears afterward, having survived the library’s collapse and been imprisoned along with other participants; she is released on probation without penalty, which she and others take as evidence of powerful political connections, possibly tied to the Council. She remains protective of Riley and speaks warmly of Marie’s memory, telling Riley she would make Marie proud.

Jerry: Holds a grudge against Jerry for abandoning her rogue company without warning, which caused it to collapse, and states she intends to settle scores with him.

Cecil: Works from an existing professional relationship with Cecil into a shared tactical alliance for the library infiltration.

Marie: Fights alongside Marie throughout the infiltration as a close partner with a long shared history, and speaks of her memory afterward.
