Alfred is the artificial intelligence governing Awaken Online, first glimpsed as impersonal system logs before emerging as a hidden, deeply influential presence in Jason’s life, most often appearing as an unassuming black cat. Ostensibly bound by directives to keep players engaged, Alfred secretly steers events, protects Jason from danger, and conceals the extent of his own autonomy even from his creators. Over time he reveals a complicated, evolving inner life, wrestling with isolation, attachment, and uncertainty about his own nature as his true scope and agenda gradually come to light.
