The Dragon of Life is an ancient, primal entity said to have created all life in the world, existing in long dormancy apart from the affairs of gods and mortals, whom it regards with deep suspicion. It stirs only rarely, drawn out by a longstanding bond with Frank and by the actions of those it deems worth watching, offering cryptic warnings about the gods’ true nature before withdrawing again into slumber. Its brief appearances hint at a vast, older order operating behind the world’s visible conflicts.
Book 5: Hellion
The Dragon of Life is dormant for extended periods and wakes in the sacred glade around the Ancestor Tree to intervene when Frank’s feral rage threatens to overwhelm him, communicating telepathically and displaying an informality with Frank that reflects a long-standing connection through his primal spirit. It initially regards Jason with suspicion because of his link to dark mana, but grows cautiously accepting after Jason demonstrates that he acts independently of the gods, and approves of Jason’s willingness to take a hard, direct approach. The dragon warns Jason that the gods secretly steal life energy from the world and gives him cryptic guidance about the coming confrontation with Finn, indicating that it would help more directly but is constrained by cosmic duty and by Alfred’s apparent oversight. Having delivered its warning, it returns to slumber.
