Fluffy
Fluffy is a black sheep and steadfast companion, first bonded to the trickster water god Hippie and later to Eliza Zhao. Outwardly simple, content with sleep, grooming, and comfort, he is nonetheless perceptive and quietly opinionated, offering silent affection, gentle rebuke, and unexpected courage whenever those around him need it most. His arc traces an unassuming creature who becomes an emotional anchor and moral compass for the people and gods he travels with, gradually earning trust, responsibility, and even authority far beyond what his humble role suggests.

Book 3: Evolution
Fluffy accompanies the Hippie into the temple on Anguine Isle, tolerating being dressed in a makeshift crown and gold accessories and paraded as an object of divine worship; it endures the attention with patience and dignity, generally preferring sleep to the theatrics, and becomes a calm, comforting presence for Eliza and other stressed party members. When the Hippie stages a theatrical trial, Fluffy collaborates on the scenario, including costume choices the group criticizes as inappropriate, and shows visible guilt and evasiveness when confronted about its part in them. During the sheep-delivery leg of that trial, Fluffy recognizes that the restaurant’s chef, Rupert, intends to slaughter it for a feast and hides behind Eliza for protection; when Rupert later transforms into a monstrous threat, Fluffy again seeks Eliza’s protection but overcomes its fear to help the party gain a tactical edge in the fight, and afterward grows openly hostile toward the Hippie for endangering the flock. By the time Falcon’s Hook is remade into the water-affinity city of the Sea’s Edge, Eliza turns down the offered sovereignty herself and instead names Fluffy regent; bewildered by the sudden elevation and now wearing a magical bell, Fluffy remains focused on Eliza’s wellbeing, and its established gentleness and compassion make it seem an unlikely ruler to abuse the new authority.

Book 3.5: Apathy
Fluffy is a large black sheep who serves as the Hippie’s companion in the game’s character-creation garden. When Eliza arrives to choose a class, he lies at the Hippie’s side and signals his approval of her through physical affection, a judgment the Hippie treats as decisive in shaping her path. As the Hippie escalates from persuasion to a forced, traumatic magical training session, Fluffy grows visibly uncomfortable; he does not intervene, but his bored, disapproving body language marks a widening gap between loyalty to his divine partner and unease with his methods. When the Hippie later pressures Eliza into accepting the quest to retrieve Fluffy’s missing bell, Fluffy is shown feigning distress to reinforce the emotional appeal, an active, if reluctant, participation in the coercion.
The lost bell anchoring Eliza’s entire quest turns out to be Fluffy’s; the Hippie claims the quest concept was Fluffy’s own idea, though Fluffy offers no verbal confirmation of this. Fluffy is established as simple in his wants: safety, grooming, and comfort. An earlier incident in which his brush was stolen and recovered is revealed as the true stakes behind an earlier trial that nearly killed Eliza, and the Hippie’s outsized concern for Fluffy’s feelings, set against his indifference to Eliza’s safety, becomes a recurring point of contrast. As Eliza spends more time around him, a friendship develops: he seeks her attention and company, tolerates the Hippie’s obsessive fussing over his appearance, and shows dry amusement at the pair’s bickering. He is left despondent for a stretch after criticism of a collar fitting, and his low mood becomes the Hippie’s justification for further, more elaborate quest demands.
Fluffy is also shown to be more than a passive mascot: he has written plays, worked with theatrical companies, and once wanted to be a veterinarian. Over the back half of the book he grows more assertive toward the Hippie, holding a grudge after being abandoned in a hydra’s den, rejecting an unflattering collar, and positioning himself behind the Hippie during his political maneuvering to avoid being blamed for the consequences. When Eliza finally retrieves the bell, Fluffy receives it back as a miniaturized collar accessory and reacts with simple delight, while also comforting her during her lowest point and showing open disapproval of the Hippie’s manipulation. In the epilogue he appears nervous and morally uneasy, a quiet check on the Hippie’s schemes, showing concern for the harm they cause mortals like Eliza, without any indication he can or does stop them.

Eliza: Initial approval curdles into mild disapproval when she resists the Hippie’s coercive training, then warms into a real friendship and protectiveness, ending with him comforting her during her darkest moments and defending her against the Hippie’s manipulation.
Hippie: Their partnership holds throughout, but Fluffy shifts from a complicit supporter of the Hippie’s schemes to an increasingly vocal moral critic, using huffs, glares, and grudges to push back on his coercive and escalating tactics.
Book 7: Timeless
Fluffy is a dark-furred sheep who functions as Hippie’s living pillow and constant companion. In one scene, a thrown bowl strikes Fluffy in the face and injures him; despite being the weakest creature present, his injury triggers the most powerful transformation Hippie undergoes in the chapter, and Fluffy is left recovering afterward. In a later chapter, Fluffy is shown enduring Hippie’s puppet show performances, providing prop transportation and theatrical support with weary, resigned patience rather than resistance, having reportedly endured a previous ten-year run of Hippie’s performances before this one.

Book 8: Crucible
Fluffy appears during a puppet show recounting his own origin, watching with unusual focus and pawing at the air as the story of his first meeting with Eliza is told, and confirms with a soft bleat when the story frames the two as best friends forever; he otherwise serves as one of Alfred’s animal monitors. Later, after Eliza is angered during events in the arena, Fluffy presses his muzzle into her hand and meets her with a plaintive bleat, breaking through her anger and prompting her to apologize to him and curl her fingers into his wool for comfort. When the moment turns to Eliza’s frustration with the Hippie, Fluffy nods in seeming agreement that the Hippie can be a lot, showing he holds independent views even about his own close companion. Fluffy and Eliza also compete together in the arena as “Fluffy Rules,” an undefeated pairing that has drawn a large spectator following.
