Vanessa
Vanessa is a talented ice and water mage whose path runs from academy overachiever and tournament rival of Finn, through a bitter falling-out that leaves her isolated and preying on other players, to eventual recruitment into Dom’s Death and Taxes guild under the handle Queen. As an infiltration and illusion specialist, she takes on increasingly dangerous covert missions, her pride and old grudges continuing to shape her choices even as she becomes one of the guild’s most capable and trusted operatives.

Book 4.1: Ember
Vanessa is introduced as an overachiever who publicly demonstrates controlled water and ice magic, quickly establishing herself as the class standout; she has already received a memory-transfer spell that puts her ahead of her peers, and she takes visible pride in her preparation and results. After Finn’s uncontrolled Fire Nova spell disrupts Lamia’s class, Vanessa tends to him and backs his account of a prior deal with Lamia, siding with him against her instructor’s authority. During a coordinated strike against superheated glass golems, she executes a precisely timed frozen orb spell as part of Finn’s tactical plan despite exhaustion from earlier fighting; afterward she resents being overshadowed by the plan’s success, offering only grudging, qualified credit while working to protect her own academic standing. She earns sponsorship from Lamia and advances through the tournament with visible composure.
In the elite tournament rounds, Vanessa defeats Zane in the semifinals through patient, illusion-based tactics, using Doppelganger clones, Ice Bolt, and Grasping Cold traps to offset a physical disadvantage, advancing her to the championship match against Finn. In the final, she opens with condescending taunts dismissing Finn’s reputation and leans on environmental advantages and an advanced multi-channel wand of unexplained origin, which she appears to keep concealed along with any outside help behind it. She dominates most of the fight through superior equipment and tactics, but her confidence in her own earned superiority leaves her unable to see Finn’s hidden strategy, and she is defeated in a final reversal.
Status: Top-performing novice water/ice mage, already advantaged by a memory-transfer spell → Tournament finalist, defeated by Finn in the championship duel
Finn: Moves from a supportive classmate who backs him against Lamia and fights alongside him in a coordinated golem battle to his prideful final tournament opponent, whom she underestimates and loses to.
Lamia: Goes from student under Lamia’s instruction to formally sponsored student, advancing through the tournament on the strength of that endorsement.
Key quote: “This is the almighty Finn that people keep talking about? You don’t seem so tough.”
Book 4.2: Flame
Vanessa serves as a subordinate ally within Kalisha’s group, openly resentful of her defeat to Finn and of taking orders under the merchant guild’s arrangement. During a sandworm crisis she is unusually quiet and visibly worried, a departure from her normal habit of jabbing at Finn. She then joins Kalisha and Malik in a coordinated ambush meant to kill Finn’s team at the edge of the Abyss, using an illusion to disguise the attack as a sandstorm; when Finn’s team escapes into the Abyss, she reacts with frustrated anger. Later she infiltrates Finn’s group by using illusion magic to impersonate Julia, intending to spy and potentially steal a relic for Kalisha’s side, but she is caught, injured, and taken prisoner. Bound and questioned, she initially responds with threats and defiance before providing intelligence about the vault’s opening requirements to avoid further harm. She dies as a helpless captive when an ice-lava interaction in the final battle produces a lethal cloud of superheated steam.
Status: Resentful subordinate ally within Kalisha’s alliance, still nursing her defeat by Finn → Dead, killed by superheated steam while chained as Finn’s prisoner
Finn: Moves from resentful rival to active betrayer trying to kill him, then becomes his prisoner and dies in his custody.
Kalisha: Acts as Kalisha’s ally and spy, infiltrating Finn’s group on her behalf before being captured.
Key quote: “We finally meet again – this time without those pesky guards”
Book 5.5: Happy
Vanessa is introduced alone in the jungle, hunting other players for profit after being left behind by her previous guild, Lahab, in the Abyss; she treats killing as a matter-of-fact business transaction and is weighing whether a new guild might match her ambitions. She travels to Dom’s recruitment and questions the process directly, confused about how the audition requirements differ from what she expected. During onboarding she is angry and defensive, accusing Dom of cheating rather than accepting her defeat gracefully, and she bears permanent scars on her wrists from a past injury she rubs when the subject of her prior trauma comes up. She specifically asks whether the guild’s training can make her strong enough to kill an avatar, revealing the scale of her ambition, and only commits after Dom demonstrates a genuine sacrifice that shifts her from suspicion to acceptance.
During team training Vanessa is initially prideful, citing her academy background and deathmatch experience against other students to justify resisting Dom’s instruction, and grows briefly hostile when challenged. She backs down once presented with clear evidence, and Dom’s critique pushes her to weaponize her ice-clone illusions and build protective armor around them. She opens up to Willow about her past, revealing that she was an academic valedictorian whose reputation was destroyed by a plagiarism accusation, and that she was betrayed by former classmates and harassed on social media afterward; this exchange marks the emergence of real vulnerability beneath her guarded pride, and the two develop a close, competitive friendship. Vanessa distinguishes herself as a battlefield strategist, contributing tactical observations before the assault on the Jackals and questioning the value of a frontal attack, and she is trusted enough by Dom to be sent on independent infiltration work, using illusions and shapeshifting to confuse and eliminate enemies from within their ranks, driven partly by her ongoing rivalry with Willow. In the endgame she takes part in the extended graveyard-camping operation against the defeated Jackals, trading barbed jokes with Walt about wanting to kill Dom even as she works alongside the team, and by the epilogue — now going by the guild handle Queen — she is a disciplined, professional operative providing ice-based tactical support, comfortable calling out teammates who slack off during a mission. A late-book aside notes she made a costly promise of real beer to the goblin allies and is left absorbing the financial consequences of keeping her word.
Status: Alive — isolated, predatory former Lahab member surviving alone in the jungle → Alive — established Death and Taxes operative (handle: Queen), trusted with independent combat and infiltration missions
Dom: Moves from suspicious, accusatory antagonism through recruitment to accepting his authority and becoming a valued, independently-trusted team member.
Willow: Develops from wary peer into a close, competitive friendship after both share painful personal histories; the rivalry pushes each to perform better without souring the bond.
Walt: Settles into a joking, competitive rapport during team operations, including dark humor about her earlier hostility toward Dom.
Key quote: “strong enough to kill an avatar?”
Book 6: Armageddon
Queen is a core operative of Death and Taxes, valued for illusion magic that lets her create doppelgangers and mimic another person’s mana signature. Using this ability she impersonates guild leader Evelyn for an extended period, feeding the guild inside knowledge of the avatar alliance, and she also helps stage a heist at Sandscrit by disguising Dom as a shark creature. Finn eventually detects the impersonation with enhanced Mana Sight, and the alliance stages a fake fight to capture her. Bound and interrogated in a stone courtyard, she reveals she was abandoned by Finn’s group in the Abyss and tortured to death repeatedly there, and that her mercenary contract has become a personal vendetta against him. She uses the interrogation to bait and psychologically destabilize her captors, then triggers a hidden mana gem implanted for the purpose, shattering her restraints and sending a coded signal that lets guildmate Pewpew fire a sniper shot; she dies in the resulting explosion, a death apparently orchestrated in advance to prevent information from being extracted from her.
Queen reappears (or a version of her guild persists) during the Mile-High Club games, where she traps Finn and Eliza in an ice mirror maze, exploiting Finn’s grief over his dead wife Rachael and declaring “this is checkmate.” She underestimates Eliza, who escapes and has a summoned kelp creature track her by heat signature and kill her. In a later confrontation she interrogates a dying Eliza about Finn’s location, again dismissing Eliza as a spent threat, only to be caught off guard by Eliza’s transformation and destroyed. In a subsequent battle alongside Bard’s team she develops a personal score to settle with Eliza specifically, fighting through her own injuries in support of the team even as she nurses a wound. Afterward, back with the wider Death and Taxes guild, she is disturbed by the extremity of an experiment she witnesses but stays loyal to the guild, admits nervousness about facing Eliza’s plant-based abilities before another engagement, and under group pressure gives Finn a grudging, insult-laced apology for having used the memory of his wife against him and for the abuse she suffered under him in the Abyss. By the end of the book she has settled into an uneasy working alliance with former enemies, using her ice magic to defuse tension within the group with dry humor.
Status: Alive → Alive (post-execution scene, remains active with Death and Taxes through the book’s final chapters)
Finn: Goes from a hidden enemy driven by revenge for being abandoned by him in the Abyss, escalating to an execution-style death during his interrogation of her, to grudgingly apologizing to him and settling into a wary working alliance.
Eliza: Repeatedly underestimates and interrogates her as a defeated target, only for Eliza to turn the tables and destroy her; this develops into a standing personal vendetta Queen carries into later fights.
Evelyn: Her long-term impersonation of Evelyn, used to spy on the avatar alliance, is exposed and ended when Finn detects the deception.
Bard: Works as an operational partner with Bard during the Mile-High Club games, coordinating interrogation and combat against Finn’s group.
Key quote: “We’ll do anything to see you dickheads die”
Book 7: Timeless
Queen maintains multiple invisibility illusions for her group during a tense escape despite mana strain, working alongside Eliza even though she previously tried to kill her; the two stay cold toward each other, but Queen remains focused on the mission’s tactical requirements. In a later operation she uses illusion magic to conceal pits and generate clones that multiply the apparent size of her team, confusing pursuing travelers and adapting her tactics as the opposition adjusts. Toward the end of the book she takes part in a resistance operation to rescue Eliza, using a stolen holo-tech suit to impersonate Mei; she reports that Death and Taxes stole the suits, and she operates under Smiles’s orders alongside Tombs as part of a wider resistance network, with the rescue succeeding.
Status: Illusion specialist in Death and Taxes, at odds with Eliza → Successful operative in the rescue of Eliza
Eliza: Their icy, antagonistic history (Queen once tried to kill her) persists through shared missions, but Queen ends the book helping successfully rescue her.
Key quote: “These holo-tech suits are crazy. We stole a couple units.”
Book 8: Crucible
During the Death and Taxes vs. Fluffy Rules deathball match, Queen mocks Eliza after the team identifies that her Mold Form is controlled by temperature, but Finn catches a ball and targets her specifically; she dies in the resulting hit, an event that collapses Death and Taxes’ formation and enables Eliza’s rampage.
Status: confident → dead
Eliza: Queen singles her out as the team’s target by exploiting the temperature mechanic behind her Mold Form, but dies before the counter-strategy can be executed.
Finn: Finn identifies her as the team’s single point of failure and kills her with a targeted ball, triggering the formation’s collapse.
Key quote: “That won’t work on us. We figured out how you’re controlling the mold. It’s all about temperature.”
