Lamia is a stern water-magic instructor at the Mage Guild academy who runs her classroom through fear and public humiliation. Convinced that travelers like Finn pose an existential threat to residents of the world, she turns her suspicion of him into open hostility, using her position and influence to work against him. Her deep-seated prejudice hardens into organized action against Finn during the academy’s tournament, with consequences that unfold in a confrontation whose true architect is someone else entirely.
Book 4.1: Ember
Lamia teaches novice mages at the academy with harsh, punitive methods, singling out weak or tardy students for expulsion and treating classroom injuries with calculated indifference; she targets Finn specifically, forcing him into a live ice-spear trial in front of the class that pushes him into revealing hidden fire magic by improvising the Fire Nova spell and destroying her classroom. After the incident she accuses Finn of breaking guild rules and being a cheater, pushing for his expulsion before the headmaster Nefreet and demanding a public duel to expose him; she loses the duel, and her composure disintegrates from cold anger into panic as she is publicly embarrassed. Her hostility hardens into open political action: she is suspected of manipulating tournament conditions and sponsoring students to block traveler advancement, motivated by a genuine, deeply held belief that travelers are an invasive threat to residents’ world. She emerges as the leader of a resident-supremacist conspiracy, recruiting fellow mages including Khiana with the goal of killing Finn and installing Khiana as guild representative; during the championship duel she helps coordinate a twenty-mage ambush against him, delivering an ideological speech about resident rights before her plan collapses. Finn’s massive magical retaliation, empowered by the Seer’s Mark of the Crone, kills Lamia along with Khiana and the rest of the conspirators in front of the assembled guild. The epilogue reveals that her real prejudice against travelers was deliberately cultivated and exploited by Abbad, the guild’s true hidden headmaster, who used her attacks to steer Finn toward fulfilling an ancient prophecy; she dies believing she acted on her own agenda, unaware she had been a manipulated pawn the whole time.
