Abbad is a master-rank air mage serving the Mage Guild as a librarian and aptitude-test administrator, a quiet role that conceals far greater influence within the guild’s hierarchy. He becomes a secret mentor and protector to a rising young mage, guiding him through danger while nursing his own hidden loyalties and long-buried grievances against the guild’s harsher practices. Thoughtful, philosophical, and self-effacing, Abbad’s arc traces a gradual unmasking, as his private convictions and true allegiances come to shape events far beyond his modest cover.
Book 4.1: Ember
Abbad first appears administering Finn’s mandatory magical aptitude test, where Finn’s expert-level fire affinity nearly overwhelms the testing crystal. Alarmed, Abbad falsifies the official report and warns Finn to conceal his true results, telling him his life depends on secrecy. He later feigns no recognition of Finn during a language-implantation session, maintaining a stoic professional front, but begins training him privately as a master-rank air mage, revealing that he secretly opposes the guild’s practice of culling promising mages and the Emir’s policies (“Not all of us agree with that goal.”). His lessons expand from magical technique, such as teaching Finn to train Mana Mastery simultaneously with language study, into open discussion of wanting fundamental change to the guild’s system, framed as a desire for freedom rather than obedience (“because i can imagine a different world where we’re more than slaves”). As the tournament approaches, he shifts strategy from keeping Finn hidden to positioning him for prominence, negotiating with Julia over Finn’s training and arranging further instruction with Brutus, a peer with whom Abbad shares an unspecified debt and history. He oversees Finn’s training, arranges for Finn and Julia to witness the purge procedure used to punish failed students, and tells Finn that people are driven by passion and fear. He supplies equipment and a mysterious book ahead of team formation, then escorts Finn, Julia, and Kyyle to Lahab and the palace for their audience with the Emir, warning Julia during the journey that she must learn to control her anger. At the palace he points out the guild mages stationed there and explains the guild’s arrangement with the Emir. Before departing and leaving the team to face the competition on their own, he gives Finn a final cryptic instruction to protect the tome he had provided.
Later, during the Abyss stage of the competition, Abbad is revealed to be composed of topaz air mana and raised from childhood by Bilel, who trained him as a servant and spy; his earlier philosophical remarks about fate and the illusion of choice are recontextualized as reflections on his own bondage. When Finn defies Bilel’s control, Abbad is inspired to attempt rebellion himself, using his trained resistance to mana-sight detection to act against his master. He survives the resulting battle with Bilel, breaks free of the compulsion that bound him, and provides the group with information about the guild’s tracking tattoos as he begins establishing a new footing with Finn’s group.

Abbad reports that “the endgame” has begun and reveals he has been a forced servant of Bilel since childhood, having administered a magical purge as a double agent; he takes responsibility for these actions and offers the alliance his strategic knowledge as partial atonement. He becomes a standing advisor to Finn, counseling on the politics of the guild-Khamsin alliance and openly acknowledging his history of divided loyalties. During the evacuation of the guilds from Lahab he coordinates communications between the Khamsin and the guilds using soundproofing and communication magic, and later briefs the war council on Bilel’s defenses and accumulated power ahead of the siege.
During the hurricane assault on Lahab, Abbad coordinates the air and water mages maintaining the storm and the protective barriers shielding the coalition, briefly freezing in horror when the controlled storm turns into environmental catastrophe before returning to his duties. After the city’s walls fall, he surveys the destruction alongside Kyyle and urges Finn to continue the mission regardless of the cost. He joins the strike team infiltrating Bilel’s palace, using his knowledge of its layout to guide the team toward the throne room and helping plan its composition and concealment against detection. Confronting Bilel, his former teacher, in the final battle, he suppresses his own doubts to supply intelligence about Bilel’s fighting instincts. He is mortally wounded raising a barrier to protect Finn and dies choosing Finn’s cause over his own life, telling him “Anything. Everything.” His death is marked with an on-page funeral in which his ashes are scattered to the wind and Finn honors him as a mentor.
