Nefreet
Nefreet is the Mage Guild’s headmaster, a cold and rigidly authoritative administrator who enforces a brutal, lethal training system she has maintained for over a century. She controls new recruits’ access to magical instruction with an iron hand and shows open bias against those she distrusts, presiding over escalating institutional crises with icy composure. Her apparent command over the guild masks a far more complicated position within its true power structure, one that gradually comes into focus as the story around her unfolds.
Book 4.1: Ember
Nefreet processes new recruits at the Lahab courtyard, including Finn, using force to enforce compliance with the guild’s magical testing and threatening exile or worse for refusal. At orientation she lays out the academy’s structure to the new students: weekly duels to the death and a monthly culling of the lowest performers, a system she established under the Emir’s authority over a century earlier and that she deliberately maintains to keep students competitive and divided rather than unified. She also personally controls novices’ access to spellbooks, and Finn comes to suspect she has supplied him damaged or incomplete texts to limit what he can learn.
When the Emir’s failing health leaves no named successor, Nefreet delivers the announcement that restructures the entire guild around a tournament: each guild must now produce a champion to compete for the succession, a change she frames publicly as “victory or death.” She oversees the competition through its escalating rounds, investigating a cheating accusation (during which she notices an exchange between a witness and the faculty member Abbad), defending the guild’s disputed policy on violence within its halls, and ultimately announcing that the final duel will be fought to the death. She shows a private, only partly concealed bias against Finn throughout the tournament, but is compelled to publicly proclaim him guild champion after his victory; her genuine surprise at his survival suggests she was not informed in advance of the conspiracy behind the final match. By the book’s end it is revealed that her authority has been a facade the whole time: without her own knowledge, she has served as the public face for the librarian Abbad’s hidden control of the guild.

Book 4.2: Flame
Nefreet remains offstage throughout Flame, acting only through orders relayed by others. After Finn wins the championship, she orders his promotion to journeyman rank. Later, she is revealed as the one who ordered the purge demonstration that Finn and Julia are made to witness, using it to threaten Finn into continued compliance while rewarding his success.
