Aerys is the leader of a Khamsin desert clan, a shrewd and pragmatic commander who tests outsiders before trusting them and uses ritual and reputation as tools of political leverage. She approaches a prophesied newcomer with calculated skepticism, staging trials meant to sway wary rivals rather than settle her own doubts, and gradually shifts from guarded gatekeeper to committed ally as circumstances draw her people into a wider conflict. Throughout, she balances her clan’s autonomy against the demands of a growing alliance, negotiating for her people’s standing.

Book 4.3: Inferno

Aerys is the leader of a Khamsin desert clan. She orchestrates a combat trial for Finn Harris, using unarmed, unenchanted warriors to test his power and restraint without revealing themselves to his mana sight. When Finn wins without killing his opponents, she publicly declares him the Najmat Alhidad, the prophesied Flame Eater, and inducts him and his allies into her clan. She later admits the trial was staged to convince skeptical clan leaders rather than out of personal conviction, and uses Finn’s induction to raise her clan’s standing among other Khamsin leaders. As outside groups arrive seeking Finn and he begins acting independently of her guidance, she grows frustrated and tries to limit his public appearances, preferring a Finn she can control to one who leads on his own terms. She initially resists an alliance with the mage guilds, citing a history of hostility toward guild representatives including Kalisha and Malik and anger at Abbad’s role in an earlier purge, but comes to accept the alliance as strategically necessary and helps coordinate its logistics, including relocating refugees from Lahab into the Hive.

As war with Bilel approaches, Aerys unifies scattered Khamsin colonies under a single banner and commits them to the coalition’s war effort, establishing training programs with guild mages despite friction with rival Khamsin factions and guild politics. She grows openly skeptical of Finn’s battle plans, questioning whether a small strike force can succeed against Bilel’s hellhound legion, and clashes with him over his refusal to share full tactical details, at one point threatening a future confrontation over the risk to her troops. During the siege of Lahab she leads Khamsin forces in the field, confronts Finn over the casualties his tactics cause, and eventually accepts his judgment. When Finn commits to a covert strike mission, Aerys commands the main decoy force in his place, revealing personal losses that have shaped her leadership and pledging to carry out his contingency plan if he does not return. After Bilel’s defeat and the transformation of Lahab into Sandscrit, she serves as a Khamsin emissary in the new political settlement, successfully negotiating autonomous status for her people within Finn’s coalition.
