Empress
The Empress is the Avatar of Light, ruler of the Crystal Reach domain, and commander of the Nephilim forces. A powerful, technologically minded sovereign, she treats the mounting human threat with imperious amusement before her guarded curiosity about Cady shifts into genuine alarm as her realm comes under direct threat. Her arc traces a proud ruler forced to weigh diplomacy against her own domain’s survival, her composure cracking as the stakes for her people and her rule grow undeniable.
Book 7: Timeless
The Empress presides over the avatar summit from her palace, initially treating the human threat with dismissive amusement while she assesses Cady, plying her with rare delicacies and gifts and absorbing ambient mana through a crystal table that represents her domain’s technological edge. As Cady’s warnings about the human threat mount, the Empress’s attitude shifts from arrogant dismissal to genuine, focused concern, and she grows suspicious of Cady even as her regard for her grows through demonstrations of power and gift-giving. When developments at Crystal Reach appear to threaten her realm, her composure breaks: she demands an explanation, her light flaring and her crown blazing into a cluster of stars, and she moves to assess whether Cady’s proposal serves her interests or endangers the Crystal Reach and her Nephilim subjects.
Status: Dismissive, imperious ruler amused by the human threat and focused on summit pageantry → Alarmed and suspicious, treating the situation at Crystal Reach as a direct threat to her rule
Cady: Moves from condescending amusement toward a mix of growing respect and mounting suspicion as Cady’s warnings and demonstrations force her to take the human threat seriously.
Sebastian: Maintains a rivalry over power and standing among the avatars.

Book 8: Crucible
The empress opens a purge of her own subjects, using a mass inquisition as bait to expose Alex’s Authority skill and recover her light relic (a ring Alex has hidden). She forms a tenuous alliance with Sebastian, the Avatar of Darkness, despite historical enmity between their factions, and casually burns her own general, Cassiel, to assert authority. Believing she holds absolute power over Alex, she subjects him to days of torture (removing his arm, breaking his wings, and inflicting burns, brandings, and mutilation) intending to break him for a propaganda livestream aimed at recruiting travelers to her cause. Her healing and buffs during the torture unknowingly strengthen Alex’s raid-group standing, and when his deception is revealed she is left outraged and unable to comprehend being outmaneuvered.
She leads the Nephilim army and flotilla south to destroy Jason’s dungeon, commanding the Dawnbreaker, a fortress-mounted beam weapon powered by sunlight capable of destroying hundreds of soldiers at once. She fires the weapon on her own corrupted troops without hesitation, viewing them as expendable tools, but advances her flotilla into a trap: the Mile High Club’s cloud manipulation cuts off the sunlight powering the Dawnbreaker, leaving her tactically boxed in. She and Sebastian bypass the dungeon’s defenses using a diversion and land at the cathedral to confront Jason directly. In the final confrontation she mocks Jason and Alex, accuses Jason of killing civilians, and orders her forces to attack with confidence in her superiority, but her composure breaks as her city and people are destroyed; she snaps at Sebastian over his disrespect for the light, threatens to kill Jason herself, and the encounter ends with her retreating rather than triumphant.
Status: Ruler of Crystal Reach and commander of the Nephilim, holding Alex captive and torturing him to recover her stolen relic. → Defeated and retreating after her flotilla is trapped, her city destroyed, and her assault on Jason’s dungeon fails.
Alex: Her son; she tortures and manipulates him believing him fully broken and under her control, but he deceives her, and by the climax she confronts him as an open enemy rather than a captive.
Sebastian: Forms a tenuous alliance of necessity with the Avatar of Darkness against Jason, coordinating military assaults with him, but the alliance is marked by tension and she eventually snaps at him.
