Mile High Club
Structure
First appears: Armageddon (Book 6)
Controlled by: Death and Taxes guild (Bk 6) → The Gambler (Bk 8)
Sites within: Death Ball Arena
The Mile High Club is the Gambler’s floating casino-and-arena city, a sprawling complex of gaming booths and death-game arenas held aloft above the clouds by an enormous central tornado. Across the series it goes from a derelict tournament ground, to the Gambler’s reopened entertainment complex, to Finn’s refurbished venue parked above Pax — before, in the finale, tearing loose to descend on Jason’s stronghold as a mobile weapon of war.
History
Book 6 — Armageddon · Ruined trial grounds
The Mile High Club first appears as a ruined, half-derelict floating arena-city — a ring of shattered buildings and courtyards swimming through the clouds around an enormous central tornado, most of its gaming booths and transport systems offline for maintenance. The Death and Taxes guild controls the tournament staged in its devastated arena, where an advancing amber wall of energy herds contestants forward across broken stone.
Changes: Long-derelict and mid-repair; a ravine splits the arena ring, moss crumbles the warded stone, and Jason’s explosive summon inflicts further damage during his trial. Introduced: the central tornado vortex, the tournament arena
Book 7 — Timeless · The Gambler reopens the club
The Gambler reopens the venue as an expansive floating entertainment and gambling complex housing multiple arenas — the Death Ball Arena chief among them. Death and Taxes run its combat spectacles with heavy betting markets and sponsorships, and the club settles into its role as the game’s premier death-game destination.
Introduced: the Death Ball Arena
Book 8 — Crucible · Refurbished, mobile, and weaponized
After the Half-Mile Club’s destruction, Finn refurbishes the Gambler’s club to its ‘sparkling, grisly glory’ and parks it above Pax, tethered to the city by two gate pieces. Kept aloft by a central tornado fed by massive mana generators, it hosts casino floors and Death Ball death-games that vent traveler frustration for coin and mana — and, under the Fates’ deal, contractually cages the gods, the Lady among them, who calls it ‘that insufferable casino.’ In the finale the entire club goes mobile: it descends through the hole the Dawnbreaker’s beam punches in the clouds, positions itself over Jason’s dark stronghold, and turns its tornado into a weapon, sucking in the Empress’s protective dark-cloud cover and redistributing it to blanket the battlefield and choke off her sunlight.
Changes: Fully repaired and expanded from its ruined state; converted into a mobile platform and battlefield weapon during the war.
