analytically concerned about the human threat, working alongside Theo to assess it
Ignis Albani is a diminutive efreet, the original Avatar of Fire and the Empress’ chief engineer, credited with building her mana generators and floating palace among the old guard of avatars. Proud of his intellectual achievements and hungry for recognition, he combines genuine engineering brilliance with a defensive streak whenever his past choices are questioned. When confronted with unsettling new evidence about the wider world, his analytical instincts and rivalries take a back seat to growing, considered concern about what the threat could mean.
Book 7: Timeless
Ignis Albani is a diminutive efreet with sandy yellow, cracked skin and curled horns, and the Empress’ chief engineer, credited with creating her mana generators and floating palace. At a social gathering he responds to Cady’s interest with embarrassed pleasure, competing with Theo for her attention and offering to show her his engineering work; the encounter reveals a craving for recognition of his intellectual achievements alongside a defensive streak when his past actions are challenged. He later demonstrates his expertise by building a crystal conference table and glass magnification tools, and argues from his own extensive research that humans lack Najima and so cannot cast magic, again responding to Cady’s flattery even as his analytical instincts engage with the puzzle she presents. When Cady brings her claims about a human threat before the assembled avatars, Ignis is initially dismissive but grows increasingly concerned as the implications sink in, questioning whether anyone could gather that much power in mere months and setting aside his rivalry with Theo to work through the evidence together.

Cady: his flattered, competitive interest in her shifts into wary analytical engagement with the threat she presents to the old avatars.
Key quote: “Only an enlightened few at the academy can progress that quickly. Are you certain they gathered this much power in mere months?”
