A loyal general serving the Empress during her inquisition, still bound by a protection arrangement with Alex and subordinate to her power
Cassiel is a Nephilim general in Crystal Reach who oversees military security and inquisition on behalf of the Empress, wielding suspicion and interrogation as tools of control. His encounter with Alex, whom he initially treats as a suspected infiltrator, shifts into a wary respect and an unusual protective arrangement once Alex proves his resolve. Rigidly loyal to the authority above him, Cassiel carries out his duties with disciplined severity even as his own standing is repeatedly tested by forces more powerful than himself.
Book 8: Crucible
Cassiel is a Nephilim general in Crystal Reach who oversees military and inquisitorial affairs under the Empress. When Alex is brought before him as a suspected traveler infiltrator, Cassiel interrogates him with a truth crystal, embedding traveler-specific terms in his questions to catch him in knowledge a native Nephilim should not have. When Alex breaks the crystal under its amplified pressure, Cassiel’s suspicion turns to respect, and he concludes that will can outweigh raw power level. He proposes using immortal travelers as expendable soldiers against the dungeon threat and recruits Alex for a campaign on the eastern border against the Twilight Throne, framing the assignment as an opportunity for redemption; unknown to Cassiel, Alex’s Authority skill subtly steers him into believing the recruitment plan is his own idea. Cassiel goes on to extend a protection arrangement that keeps Alex alive despite the open contempt of the Nephilim soldiers around him. Later, aboard the fortress Dawnbreaker, Cassiel oversees an inquisition ordered by the Empress, recognizes Alex from the earlier destruction of a Nephilim village, and carries out a series of executions without questioning their justification. When Sebastian appears, Cassiel moves to shield the Empress despite the danger to himself; she responds by burning and disarming him, and he submits instantly, exposing how little his own authority weighs against hers.
