Caerus Auriel
Caerus Auriel is the Head of House Auriel, a noble strategist whose talent for organization and political maneuvering makes him a valued advisor to figures in power. Introduced as a rebel plotting against a tyrannical regent, he later serves as a trusted counselor to Alexion, using his connections and tactical sense to shape campaigns and smooth over conflicts. Beneath his composed, diplomatic exterior lies a willingness to carry out increasingly ruthless orders, as loyalty and ambition steadily pull him deeper into his patron’s cause.
Book 2: Precipice
Caerus, Head of House Auriel, approaches Alex on a bridge in Grey Keep, offering an alliance timed to Alex’s moment of goal clarity. He identifies himself as opposed to Regent Strouse’s tyrannical rule and proposes that Alex become a martyr for a rebellion: a public execution staged to incite an uprising, using Alex’s religious standing with the Lady of Light as leverage. Caerus argues from historical precedent that martyrdom produces the most convincing displays of religious conviction, and Alex agrees to the plan.

Book 3: Evolution
After Crystal Reach falls, Caerus reports to Alexion on the city’s condition, arguing that the surviving population, not the dead, is the real threat to long-term control. He stands beside Alexion at public executions and argues that fear alone will backfire by uniting the populace against them, proposing instead that Alexion give the people a common enemy to hate. Alexion is visibly irritated by the suggestion’s implied criticism, but the idea takes hold.
Caerus brokers a meeting between Alexion and fire guild master Gracien, drawing on a prior relationship with Gracien to secure the introduction and briefing Alexion on the stakes beforehand. Soon after, Alexion tasks him with organizing a covert operation to leave no survivors; Caerus is briefly startled to learn the order requires eliminating his own recruited soldiers to preserve secrecy, but commits to it without further objection.
He becomes the operational backbone of Alexion’s Confessor program: positioning troops and securing the site for the assembly that launches it, then personally selecting recruits for the transformation process based on their corruptibility and devotion. During the executions that follow, he manages crowd control and spreads rumors to justify the killings, and is visibly startled by how effective the transformed Confessors turn out to be in combat.
His role expands into field command. He handles payment and surveillance logistics for one of Alexion’s meetings, then leads the Confessor and nephilim forces in the attack on Sibald, reporting battlefield conditions with professional composure despite unease at the mission’s targets. Exhausted after the fighting, he confronts Gracien directly over friendly fire and tactical incompetence that cost lives, risking his standing with a powerful ally to press the point.
During the infiltration of Vaerwald, Caerus accompanies Alexion and oversees captured undead slaves with open, entitled cruelty, dismissing the human cost of the operation as an acceptable price for the plan’s success. He then commands nephilim guards in rounding up nearly a hundred Vaerwald civilians and planting evidence to cover the operation’s tracks, escalating from capture toward mass killing without protest. The arc closes with Caerus on the keep wall, signaling the nephilim and Confessors to begin the mass ritual sacrifice, carrying out the atrocity through quiet, efficient coordination rather than open advocacy.

Evelyn dismisses him as irrelevant during the exchange, but he remains loyal and continues supporting Alexion regardless.
