Synopsis
Awaken Online 3.5 - Apathy follows Eliza Zhao, a brilliant but emotionally numb high school student trapped between parental expectations for medical school and her complete lack of interest in that path. Her declining academic performance prompts her concerned parents to gift her VR equipment and Awaken Online as a therapeutic outlet, hoping the game might help with her apparent depression and social isolation. Upon entering the virtual world, Eliza discovers an affinity for water magic and alchemy, initially finding peace in the routine herbalism work at Alma’s compound in Falcon’s Hook.
Eliza’s peaceful existence is shattered when the Hippie, a chaotic water god, forcibly recruits her as his champion in a divine competition between sibling gods. Tasked with retrieving Fluffy the sheep’s lost bell from Tollhouse Farm, Eliza gradually transforms from a reluctant pacifist into the feared “Ice Witch.” Her evolution begins with necessity-driven trap creation to hunt the Silver Stag, but escalates into systematic player killing as her trap network spreads throughout the forest. The bounty system’s economic incentives and player-versus-player violence force moral compromises that fundamentally change her character.
The central tragedy unfolds when Lord Baen blackmails Eliza into stopping smuggling operations at Tollhouse Farm, using his deduction of her Ice Witch identity as leverage. Desperate to complete both his impossible quest and the Hippie’s demands, Eliza develops a biological weapon using mutated mold that she believes will simply incapacitate the criminals. However, her creation proves catastrophically more destructive than anticipated, transforming humans into sporelings and threatening to spread beyond the farm to contaminate the entire game world.
The climactic sequence sees Eliza trapped within her own catastrophe, watching the mold slaughter innocent farm workers including Brian, a kind shepherd who had befriended her. In a desperate attempt to save him and prevent global contamination, Eliza uses divine magic granted by the Hippie to transform Brian into a plant-human hybrid capable of destroying the Queen Cluster from within. Brian’s sacrificial destruction of the mold source saves the world but costs him his human form, leaving only a heartbeat-infused sapling as proof of his continued existence.
The book concludes with Eliza’s realization that the Hippie could have retrieved the bell through divine power from the beginning, making the entire disaster unnecessary manipulation designed to transform her into a more effective champion. Despite gaining massive power and levels from the casualties she caused, Eliza is left guilt-ridden but determined to find a way to restore Brian, while the epilogue reveals the larger context of divine siblings competing through mortal champions, with the Hippie forming an alliance with the Old Man (Jason’s patron) to maintain their competitive advantage against other gods.
Story arcs
Eliza's Escape: From Academic Prison to Virtual Agency (1-5)
Eliza Zhao, a high school student trapped under her doctor parents’ oppressive academic expectations, discovers virtual freedom through Awaken Online when her parents gift her VR equipment out of concern for her deteriorating mental health. Set in October 2076, four days after the game’s release, Eliza’s story begins with her preparing dinner while dreading the inevitable discussion of her declining test scores and her complete lack of desire to pursue the medical career her parents have mapped out for her.
After overhearing her parents compare her withdrawal to a suicidal patient her father treated, Eliza enters the game’s character creation area—a mystical garden overseen by an eccentric hippie-like entity called the Great Black Sheep and his companion Fluffy. Instead of following the traditional object selection process, Eliza’s gardening expertise and indecisive nature catch the Hippie’s attention, leading him to assign her the mysterious ‘Path of Water’ focused on acceptance. This choice bypasses the normal selection entirely, granting her True-Neutral alignment and the enigmatic ‘Attention of the Great Black Sheep.’
Spawning in the port city of Falcon’s Hook, Eliza deliberately avoids the combat training that other new players pursue, instead exploring the market where she discovers an herbalism stall run by Alma, an older woman who becomes her mentor. Accepting Alma’s apprenticeship quest, Eliza finds genuine happiness and fulfillment learning alchemy and herbalism at Alma’s compound outside the city—the first time she’s felt authentic excitement in months. However, when Alma suggests she select a class, the Hippie reappears and forcibly drowns her with magical water to teach her the Veridian language, traumatically assigning her the Water Mage class without her consent.
The arc culminates as Eliza settles into a peaceful routine of gardening, potion-making, and skill development, only to face escalating coercion from the Hippie, who reveals himself as a god tasked by his divine siblings to balance the disruption caused by Jason’s conquest of Lux. When Eliza repeatedly refuses his ‘Grand Fetch Quest’ to retrieve Fluffy’s lost item, preferring her quiet life with Alma, the frustrated deity creates a magical barrier preventing her from entering Falcon’s Hook until she complies with his demands.
The Reluctant Hero's Trial: From Divine Trap to Quest Acceptance (6-10)
Eliza finds herself trapped in a divine web when the Hippie forces her to complete an impossible quest by trapping her in a spatial loop that prevents escape from the Troll Bridge. After the Mountain Troll kills her for failing to pay an adequate toll, she discovers the creature is Level 76 while she is only Level 8. The Hippie casually admits he forgot about the troll and reveals it stole an ‘item of immense power,’ leaving Eliza with no choice but to devise a solution or remain trapped forever.
Spending several days observing the troll’s behavior and gathering poisonous plants, Eliza develops an innovative combat strategy that inverts her healing knowledge into lethal application. She successfully creates a B-quality poison using advanced alchemy and herbalism, then descends into the dangerous gorge to infiltrate the troll’s bone-littered cave. Using her Obscuring Mist spell combined with the poison, she creates a toxic gas cloud that severely weakens the creature, allowing her to deliver a mercy killing with Ice Bolt. The anticlimactic revelation that the ‘item of immense power’ was merely Fluffy’s grooming brush leaves her speechless.
Back in the real world, Eliza watches news coverage of Jason’s violent conquest of Lux, feeling impressed rather than repelled by his unrestrained use of power. With only one week left before her academic obligations end her gaming time, she contemplates what it would mean to act without restraint like Jason and consider accepting whatever role the Hippie is trying to force upon her.
Returning to Alma’s peaceful garden, Eliza experiences a fundamental shift in her relationship with divine quests. When the Hippie proposes hunting the legendary Silver Stag to create a collar for Fluffy, she surprises everyone—including herself—by immediately accepting the dangerous A-rank quest. This marks a dramatic evolution from her previous resistance to willing participation in the god’s schemes, setting the stage for her next trial in the deep forest.
From Helpless Wanderer to Tactical Alchemist: Eliza's Transformation Through Violence (11-15)
This arc chronicles Eliza’s dramatic evolution from an aimless, vulnerable player into a competent tactical alchemist capable of deadly violence. The journey begins with her frustrated wandering through the northern forest searching for the elusive Silver Stag, guided only by the cryptic and unreliable advice of the hippie god. Her strategic breakthrough comes when she stops random searching and focuses on water sources where animals must drink, leading her to discover the stag at a small lake. However, this discovery also reveals the deadly competition she faces - organized player groups hunting the same 200 gold bounty who kill her without hesitation and steal her possessions.
The turning point occurs when Alma, her alchemist mentor, reveals both practical solutions and shocking secrets. After Eliza confesses about her divine quest, Alma proposes weaponizing her Obscuring Mist spell through custom poison-delivery staffs created by engineer Evan Crown. This leads Eliza to Falcon’s Hook, where she successfully negotiates with the enthusiastic inventor using treasure from the troll cave. Evan’s manic excitement about creating ‘glorious instruments of destruction’ establishes the technological foundation for Eliza’s combat transformation.
The arc’s climax involves Alma’s revelation of her true identity as a former Royal Poisoner, complete with a hidden laboratory containing advanced equipment and test animals. This discovery fundamentally shifts the story’s moral landscape as Eliza transitions from learning basic alchemy to mastering lethal poison creation. The laboratory becomes her training ground where she develops multiple toxin variants including paralytic, wasting, and debuff poisons.
The arc concludes with Eliza’s first successful field test against a grizzly bear, where she demonstrates her evolved tactical thinking by combining careful preparation, magical mist delivery, and clinical execution. Her water mana helps maintain emotional detachment during the prolonged killing, marking her psychological adaptation to necessary violence while acknowledging the moral complexity of her actions.
The Birth of the Ice Witch (16-20)
Eliza begins this arc struggling with the tactical challenges of hunting the Silver Stag, recognizing that her current spells are inadequate against the creature’s incredible speed and the competition from other players. After extensive experimentation with spell modification, the Hippie god intervenes to teach her a delayed-trap version of Cold Grasp, which she successfully combines with her poison vials to create lethal snares. However, her innocent trap-testing accidentally kills multiple players in the forest, earning her the notorious reputation as the ‘Ice Witch’ among the player community.
Eliza’s social struggles in the real world intensify when her classmates dismiss her claims about soloing bears in Awaken Online, deepening her resentment and driving her determination to prove herself through the Silver Stag quest. This dismissal becomes a catalyst for her psychological transformation, as she begins to embrace her newfound power and the fear she generates among other players. She collects sophisticated poison-delivery wands from Evan and systematically expands her trap network throughout the western forest, deliberately eliminating competition for the Silver Stag.
The arc culminates when Eliza successfully traps the Silver Stag after hours of patient waiting, only to watch helplessly as the same PK group that previously murdered her arrives and casually claims her prize. In a desperate act of deception and revenge, she approaches them disguised as a harmless alchemist, then uses her poison-enhanced mist to paralyze all twelve players. The arc ends with Eliza’s complete moral transformation as she executes the PK leader and prepares to eliminate the remaining helpless players, fully embracing her identity as the Ice Witch - a force of absolute judgment operating beyond conventional morality.
This arc marks Eliza’s evolution from an awkward, socially isolated student into a calculating and remorseless serial killer who finds peace and purpose in virtual violence. Her technical mastery of magical systems combined with her growing psychological detachment creates a new identity where she experiences divine-like transcendence through the systematic elimination of those who cross her path.
The Divine Puppet Show: Revelation and Coercion (21-25)
This arc marks a pivotal transformation in Eliza’s journey as she transitions from completing divine quests to becoming trapped in a web of manipulation and blackmail. The arc begins with Eliza’s return from her Silver Stag quest, struggling with conflicted emotions about the power she felt while killing other players versus the guilt that followed. The Hippie god appears to collect the pelt for Fluffy’s collar, displaying his typical irreverent behavior while questioning whether the leather is ‘vegan’ despite having sent Eliza to kill the creature. This absurd divine comedy contrasts sharply with Eliza’s serious moral wrestling, establishing the central tension between divine frivolity and mortal consequence.
The middle chapters shift focus to political intrigue as Eliza and Alma visit Lord Baen’s deteriorating trading house to collect the Silver Stag bounty. Despite the building’s decay, Lord Baen maintains a luxurious office overlooking the bay, embodying the contradiction between projected prosperity and underlying failure. Lord Baen reveals his business troubles - ships disappearing near Anguine Island while rival Lord Cairn thrives - and manipulates Eliza into accepting a quest to investigate Tollhouse Farm. Simultaneously, the Hippie assigns an automatic quest requiring Eliza to retrieve a massive bell from the very compound she’s meant to investigate, forcing her to confront a disturbing realization: the seemingly chaotic god has been orchestrating elaborate long-term manipulation spanning all her previous quests.
The climax arrives when Eliza discovers that Tollhouse Farm is actually a fortified compound resembling a military installation rather than a simple farm. Her investigation reveals suspicious sheep injuries suggesting the animals are being used to transport contraband, while her romantic connection with the kind sentry Brian complicates her mission. The arc concludes with Lord Baen’s revelation that he has deduced Eliza’s identity as the Ice Witch and uses this knowledge to blackmail her into permanently stopping the smuggling operation. Trapped between divine manipulation and mortal coercion, with no alternatives remaining, Eliza reluctantly accepts the dangerous quest that may force her to harm innocent people like Brian and Clarice.
The Biological Weapon Arc: From Academic Crisis to Catastrophic Innovation (26-30)
Eliza faces mounting pressure from multiple sources as her parents discover a B grade and threaten to remove her gaming access unless she improves academically. This real-world crisis intensifies while she struggles with impossible quests from Lord Baen (stop smuggling operation, steal massive bell) and the Hippie (steal the bell from Tollhouse Farm). Her frustration and desperation drive her to seek innovative solutions.
Alma teaches Eliza the Accelerated Growth spell after witnessing her breakdown over the impossible tasks. Observing Carnivore Mold attacking organic matter, Eliza realizes she can weaponize plant growth. Through systematic experimentation with mold cultures and various mutagens, she discovers microevolution principles and creates a self-accelerating mutant mold that can grow exponentially without continuous mana channeling.
Eliza infiltrates Tollhouse Farm using sheep salve delivery as cover, while secretly deploying biological weapon cultures around the bell tower. Her mission becomes complicated when she develops genuine emotional connections with Brian, a kind guard who shares his life story and dreams. Forced to work in distant fields treating sheep, she anxiously monitors her timer as the mold cultures reach critical mass.
The arc culminates when the farm’s alarm bells sound, signaling the catastrophic activation of Eliza’s biological weapon. Racing back with Brian and armed shepherds, she witnesses the devastating destruction she has unleashed upon people she has grown to care about, realizing the horrific consequences of her desperate innovation.
The Tollhouse Catastrophe: Divine Manipulation and Sacrificial Transformation (31-35)
Eliza’s experimental fungal sabotage of Tollhouse Farm spirals catastrophically out of control, creating a mutant mold that consumes the entire compound and transforms residents into parasitic creatures called sporelings. Together with Brian and a group of shepherds, Eliza desperately fights to contain the outbreak by creating fire barriers around the farm’s perimeter using lanolin oil and her herbicide-enhanced mist spell. As the sporelings adapt to her countermeasures and overwhelm their defenses, Brian is mortally wounded by the corrosive fungal infection.
In her desperation to save Brian, Eliza attempts an experimental combination of healing potions and her Accelerated Growth spell, accidentally transforming him into a sentient plant-human hybrid with branch limbs and glowing blue eyes. When the evolved Queen Cluster at the farm’s center prepares to release a massive spore cloud that would spread the infection beyond the containment barriers, Eliza prays to the Hippie for divine intervention. The god grants her unlimited magical power for sixty seconds, which she uses to enhance Brian’s transformation further.
Brian sacrifices himself to destroy the Queen Cluster from within, setting off a massive explosion that incinerates the entire farm and eliminates the mold threat. Eliza survives in the aftermath, wracked with guilt over the deaths she caused, but discovers that Brian’s consciousness has been preserved as a Strange Sapling with the potential for resurrection. The Hippie reveals that the entire quest was orchestrated as a lesson, manipulating Eliza into continued dependence on him while offering hope for Brian’s revival.
Eliza confronts Lord Baen about the mission’s outcome, leveraging her newfound reputation to negotiate better terms and establish employment at The Seaman’s Folly tavern. Meanwhile, divine machinations unfold as the Hippie forms a strategic partnership with the Old Man, combining their mortal champions in a cosmic competition between gods, setting up future convergence between Eliza and the necromancer Jason.
