Sandscrit
Settlement
First appears: Evolution (Book 3)
Controlled by: Unknown player who completed conversion (Bk 3) → Finn (Bk 6)
Sandscrit is the fire-affinity elemental city of the northern desert, reforged by Finn from the conquered city of Lahab into a flame-themed metropolis of sandy spires built in three concentric defensive layers atop an ancient rock island. It becomes the fortress Finn defends against Jason’s undead siege in Book 5 — a battle that melts its glass towers into molten pools and leaves it in ruins — then recovers as Finn’s home city, weathers a framed gate-piece theft, and by Book 8 stands as one of the original elemental cities, remembered as much for that siege as for its fire-lit spires.
History
Book 3 — Evolution · First mention, distant fire city
Sandscrit is introduced only in passing as a magical fire-affinity city located weeks of travel away in the northern desert region of the continent, associated with the new efreet race. No firsthand visit occurs; it is known secondhand as the destination of a player who completed a conversion (likely a race-change quest tied to the efreet).
Book 4.3 — Inferno · Lahab reborn as fire city
The former city of Lahab is fully transformed into Sandscrit, a flame-themed desert city with sandy spires, sand-covered streets, and fire-affinity architecture, now ruled by Finn. The transformation required only minimal repair since magical restoration handled most reconstruction, and by the events shown the city has stabilized into a peaceful, functioning settlement with residents resuming normal routines and guild halls being reoccupied. An open desert landing zone just outside the city limits serves as a secure airship landing site guarded by the infernal guard and fire mages, and the city itself becomes the quiet backdrop for political negotiation, with its restored stability and prosperity framed as the stakes that could be lost to conflict.
Changes: Complete reconstruction with flame-themed architecture; buildings intact but remodeled for fire affinity; only minimal damage remained, requiring repair due to the magical nature of the transformation. Introduced: sandscrit landing zone, guild halls
Book 5 — Hellion · Three-layer fortress under siege
Sandscrit is revealed as a massive three-tiered desert city built around an original rock island: a fortified outer layer behind sandstone walls over 50 feet high, a middle layer of glass buildings and towers, and a heavily warded inner layer holding the palace, mage guild, and Finn’s primary defensive forces, all connected by a security checkpoint system with affinity-testing crystals at the western gate. An underground level beneath the mage guild houses a prison complex reached through a massive warded wooden portal and cell-lined tunnels. The city becomes the target and then the battlefield of Jason’s assault: the outer two layers are breached and overrun by sandworms and undead, the middle layer’s glass buildings are melted into an ocean of molten glass by beam weapons, and the inner layer holds out as Finn’s last redoubt before an explosive plant-growth event and a final airborne confrontation between avatars plays out in the skies above. By the end the city sits in ruins, trapped travelers and residents released from its dungeon, and its three-layer defensive structure largely destroyed.
Changes: Outer walls breached in multiple places by sandworm and undead incursion; middle layer buildings melted into molten glass by beam weapons; underground wards and defenses failed; extensive fire and craterin damage throughout; inner layer’s protective dome torn open. Introduced: sandscrit outer layer, sandscrit middle layer, sandscrit inner layer, western gate, security checkpoint, mage guild, palace, underground prison / dungeon tunnels, sandscrit rooftops
Book 6 — Armageddon · Recovering from siege, gate piece theft
Sandscrit remains Finn’s coastal home city in the aftermath of the prior siege, still bearing glass-building remnants and molten pools from the earlier battle even as makeshift repairs are underway. A new incident occurs: Death and Taxes stage a heavily fortified attack on the city that frames Eliza for stealing one of Finn’s gate pieces, and the theft is broadcast widely, damaging Finn’s reputation and making him appear weak to his enemies. The city is also referenced retrospectively as the devastated site of the earlier avatar battle involving Jason, Eliza, Finn, and Alexion, with vegetation strangely blooming amid the dry buildings during a later transformation event.
Changes: Glass-building damage and makeshift repairs remaining from the prior siege; further damage sustained during the Death and Taxes attack.
Book 8 — Crucible · Referenced as shared history
Sandscrit appears only in retrospective references: Jason recalls it as the desert elemental city where he and Karen previously met, establishing their shared history, and separately cites it as one of the original elemental cities (associated with earth and desert terrain) as a grim alternative when weighing a contract, noting travelers there have historically ended up as worm food. No direct visit or new description of the city’s current state occurs.
