Head of Cerillion security, still loyal to George and coordinating with Cady, but visibly under pressure from prior failure and PR/crowd constraints
Ryan Vance is Cerillion Entertainment’s head of security, a loyal enforcer who answers directly to George Lane and carries out his directives without question, however harsh. He oversees surveillance, personnel records, and threat elimination for the corporate side of the company’s operations, using biometric and monitoring technology to track people of interest. Confident in his authority at first, he grows visibly strained under mounting pressure and prior failures, forced to balance ruthless efficiency against public scrutiny while remaining George’s trusted instrument.
Book 8: Crucible
Ryan Vance heads security for Cerillion Entertainment and answers directly to George Lane, executing George’s directives even when they mean eliminating people identified as loose ends. When Cady is authorized to investigate the Cerillion break-in, Ryan is forced to cooperate despite resenting the intrusion on his authority; he had already reviewed the footage and dismissed the incident, and it is Cady who catches the detail he missed, missing holo-suits in inventory that prove Eliza had accomplices. He proposes bringing in Eliza’s parents for questioning and, per George’s orders, plans to eliminate the accomplices once they are identified. He is also aware of Alex’s neural scans, which show extensive damage and an incomplete memory restoration, and is part of the decision to keep the break-in from Alex. George separately assigns him to surveil Cady under the pretense of assistance; Cady spots and evades his team without difficulty, an amateur showing by Cady’s own assessment. Later, at Cerillion, he supports George during a confrontation with Robert, pulling personnel logs and keycard records from his Core to corroborate George’s account, and shares an unspoken look with George that suggests the two share knowledge Robert isn’t given. When Jason and others go missing from a Cerillion event, Ryan uses biometric implants built into his eyes to detect elevated heart rates and read deception while tracking them; his tense reporting and visible fear when George warns him not to fail again point to an earlier, unspecified failure that has left him vulnerable to George’s expectations, and he shows friction when Cady is given lead on the search. In the book’s final chapters, he commands security at a public event, recognizing that his twenty guards cannot safely manage a crowd of hundreds without risking a riot; he has his guards feign normal event security while quietly positioning them near Jason and Alex, working alongside Cady under the same PR constraints that keep him from acting more forcefully.
Status: Head of Cerillion security, confident in his authority and unquestioned within George’s operation → Head of Cerillion security, still loyal to George and coordinating with Cady, but visibly under pressure from prior failure and PR/crowd constraints
Cady: Starts as antagonistic toward her perceived overstepping, is forced into cooperation when George grants her his resources, and ends the book working alongside her at the public event despite lingering professional friction.
George: Remains loyal and executes George’s orders including surveillance of Cady and elimination of loose ends, while showing visible fear of George’s consequences after an implied earlier failure.
