Captured and defeated, pleading for death after Dom overruns her defenses
Nova is an air-and-lightning mage and senior officer within a mercenary guild, serving as her leader’s closest lieutenant and enforcer. Impatient and pragmatic, she favors harsher, faster methods than her superior’s careful manipulation, overseeing recruitment, logistics, and intelligence with a blunt confidence that occasionally curdles into cruelty toward those beneath her. As the guild’s ambitions draw it into open conflict, her composure is tested by mounting danger, and the story tracks how far her loyalty and self-assurance can be pushed before they crack.
Book 5.5: Happy
Nova is introduced as one of Booker’s officers in Aislen, amplifying his voice during recruitment pitches to travelers and pushing for harsher, faster methods than his patient manipulation. As the guild’s fire road through the jungle is built, she oversees air-magic operations and personnel matters, including culling of guild members, which she accepts as an unavoidable cost of keeping the operation running rather than something to question. When Sean becomes trapped in a cave-in, Nova is reached over voice chat and initially toys with him, refusing to help until he asks properly; she then rescues his team and mocks his failure as “Princess” while immediately falling into line the moment Booker steps in. She also functions as the guild’s intelligence conduit, using a communication ability to relay findings on enemy movements (including identifying a demolition-team member who had seen Dom) and shows a deeper grasp of Booker’s concealed strategy than the guild’s other officers.
During the assault on Boomtown, Nova leads an air mage unit through a flanking route to rejoin the attack, showing personal concern for Booker’s safety before parting ways with him. She commands a squad tasked with destroying the goblin settlement, setting explosive traps meant to kill Walt and Lauren; initially confident and mocking, she is overwhelmed as the ambush turns against her. Walt drags her underground and detonates the charges himself to stop the flooding of Boomtown, killing himself and leaving her traumatized by the near-death experience. She recovers quickly into a pragmatic, damage-control role afterward, mediating tension between Booker and Sean and reframing the failed mission as a partial success rather than a total loss. When Dom later launches his final assault on Aislen, Nova tries to delay him with lightning-cage traps and warns Sean away from a direct confrontation, but her priorities shift toward self-preservation as the fight collapses around her; she is ultimately captured and, stripped of her earlier composure, begs to be killed rather than prolong the ordeal.
Status: Alive — impatient guild officer supporting Booker’s recruitment drive → Captured and defeated, pleading for death after Dom overruns her defenses
Sean: Her taunting, dominance-driven teasing during his cave-in rescue settles into a working officer partnership, though she still needles him over his failures even as she tries to warn him off a direct clash with Dom.
Booker: Her professional deference deepens into visible personal concern for his safety before the Boomtown assault, and she stays loyally at his side afterward even as the guild’s position collapses.
Dom: Goes from confidently plotting his and his allies’ destruction to being captured and overpowered by him during the final assault on Aislen.
Key quote: “You fucked up, and I had to come rescue you, Princess.”
