Freed captive, personally loyal to Finn out of blood debt while still serving the Emir
Altair is the Emir’s guard captain, a disciplined soldier assigned to escort a group of champions across dangerous desert territory. Professional and watchful, he grows suspicious of sabotage within the group he is meant to protect, and his loyalties are tested when he is captured and mistreated by a rival faction. His fortunes shift decisively after being rescued, reshaping his allegiance and marking him as a soldier whose duty ultimately bends toward genuine personal loyalty rather than institutional obligation.
Book 4.2: Flame
Altair leads the royal guard escort transporting the champion teams to the Abyss. He runs the caravan with military efficiency, sets strict travel rules, and shows open disdain toward the Khamsin desert peoples, at one point threatening lethal force against anyone who challenges his authority. He identifies Julia by the title “Khamsin,” a reference to her hidden desert heritage that the champions do not yet understand. As accidents mount during the journey, he concludes the champions are being sabotaged and tightens security, restricting movement and withholding resources. When the caravan is ambushed by sand wraiths, he rallies the surviving guards to a defensive position, unable to protect the champions while fighting for his men’s survival. His earlier information about the chasm below the Abyss later proves incomplete or misleading, deepening the champions’ distrust of him, though his true motives are never confirmed.
After the ambush, Altair and his surviving soldiers are captured by the Khamsin and held captive for days, enduring torture. He conceals from his men that the Emir has abandoned them to their fate, maintaining their morale at his own expense. Witnessing Finn’s emergence as a prophetic figure, he recognizes Finn as the “blind prophet” foretold in Khamsin lore and undergoes a genuine shift from skepticism to belief. When Finn frees him and his soldiers from captivity, Altair’s hostility toward the champions gives way to personal devotion; he pledges his loyalty to Finn as a blood debt, remaining nominally in the Emir’s service but now functioning as Finn’s subordinate and protector.
