Bartender for the Gambler
Oscar is an unusually intelligent rat serving a powerful, imprisoned god who runs a strange casino-like domain. Unable to speak, he communicates through squeaks, posture, and gesture with a personality and dignity far beyond an ordinary animal, handling menial labor while quietly asserting his own opinions and pride in his work. He becomes an emotional anchor and steady presence for those who pass through his master’s domain, offering comfort, comic relief, and even quiet pushback against the god he serves.
Book 5.5: Happy
Oscar is a rat companion to the Gambler, the imprisoned god who runs the Luckless Mark casino, and helps maintain the casino floor. He cannot speak, but communicates through squeaks, posture, and gestures, and shows intelligence and emotional range well beyond an ordinary animal, including visible offense when dismissed as a pest and evident pride in his work. Over the course of the book he becomes a steady source of comfort for Dom Hart, the casino’s marked champion: he pats Dom’s hand during an emotional crisis, later cheers him with paw waves and hi-fives, and appreciates Dom’s humor, and the two develop what reads as a genuine friendship despite the difference in species. Oscar also functions as an unofficial check on the Gambler, watching the god’s dealings with Dom with visible skepticism and communicating disapproval through pointed squeaks and stares that the Gambler notices; when Dom reveals his terminal illness, Oscar responds with open emotion and uses sharp squeaks to redirect the Gambler’s anger, acting as much an advisor as a servant.
Oscar’s day-to-day role continues alongside this. He is startled into fear by Wingman, the newly hatched Battle Chicken, recognizing it as a threat despite its harmless appearance, and later gets knocked around by table impacts during a tense negotiation, saving himself while holding onto his cheese. By the book’s later chapters he is still handling casino maintenance, voicing sardonic, grammatically fastidious complaints about his conditions while completing his assigned tasks competently, preserving a personal dignity that survives his continued subservience to the Gambler.
Status: Alive — loyal casino companion to the Gambler → Alive — still in the Gambler’s service, resigned but dutiful
Dom: Moves from simply accompanying Dom through his ordeals to offering active, responsive comfort and humor, becoming a genuine emotional anchor for him.
Gambler: Increasingly acts as the Gambler’s conscience, using squeaks and stares to register disapproval and to check the god’s temper, including when Dom’s illness is revealed.
Book 6: Armageddon
Oscar appears briefly as one of the Gambler’s transformed servants inside the Mile-High Club. He is first seen weary and irritated, leaning on his cleaning supplies as he handles janitorial duties; he was once a fairy before being reduced to his current rat form, and has apparently maintained the floating city for a century. He squeaks in frustration when interrupted and is cut off before he can voice any protest, suggesting quiet resentment toward his servitude. Later he is shown serving drinks and carrying heavy items for the divine pantheon, slumped and increasingly worn down, but he continues fulfilling his assigned duties without apparent complaint.
Status: Alive — weary, transformed servant handling janitorial duties for the Gambler → Alive — exhausted, still serving the gods without complaint
Book 7: Timeless
Oscar serves drinks for the Gambler and, communicating through chittering and bowing rather than speech, shows appreciation when the Fates notices he remembers her preference for two ice cubes.
Fates: The Fates recognizes Oscar as having previously served her and remembering her preference for two ice cubes, which he appreciates.
